When it Comes to Debate Twitter Chatter, Bernie Sanders Comes out on Top

According to data from Amobee Brand Intelligence, the Vermont senator was mentioned in 409,968 tweets between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday night, more than twice as many mentions as his closest rival, Hillary Clinton. Ahead of the debate, Mr. Sanders became the first 2016 presidential candidate to purchase Twitter’s top trending hashtag, one of Twitter’s most expensive ad options.

Posts about Mr. Sanders peaked at 9:51 p.m. with nearly 10,000 tweets around his comments to Mrs. Clinton that “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails.” There were 27,553 tweets that mentioned “damn e-mails” between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., the biggest moment during the debate, according to Amobee.

I thought it was just the hash tag that got the most comments and retweets at any given time, but if that was the case it couldn't be sold.
