2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDNC approves Black Lives Matter presidential town hall.
'The Black Lives Matter movement seemingly has more clout with the Democratic National Committee than Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clintons political opponents may not have been able to secure more debates for the 2016 presidential primaries, but the DNC has agreed to a town hall discussion hosted by the #BlackLivesMatter network and Campaign Zero activists.
We believe that your organization would be an ideal host for a presidential candidate forum where all of the Democratic candidates can showcase their ideas and policy positions that will expand opportunity for all, strengthen the middle class and address racism in America, DNC CEO Amy K. Dacey said Wednesday in a letter to movements leaders, the Washington Post reported.
The ball is now in their court.
Black Lives Matter organizer Elle Hearns said the DNCs decision not to host an additional debate on racial themes, after a request was made Tuesday, was disappointing.
Their response to our request is unsatisfactory. Debbie Wasserman Schultz should be more mindful of her responsibility not only to the DNC, but to the American people, Hearns told the newspaper.
Activist DeRay Mckesson said Wednesday he is working to secure commitments from all presidential candidates to attend a town hall, the Post reported. He will also attempt coordinate a similar effort with the Republican National Committee.
We want to bring together all of the candidates, not focused on either political party, to have a conversation centered on race and criminal justice, Mckesson said.

(24,544 posts)And when certain folks high fived Ben FREAKING Carson for dissing BLM in the most dishonest, ignorant and craven ways possible??
And isn't it just precious and adorable that the same folks who said these sorts of things are now racing around DU talking about how they don't "feel comfortable" in the AA forum???
Who'd have thunk it?????

(31,849 posts)She is SOOO in the tank or HRC, she'll even approve a BLM forum for the Democratic candidates ... that have largely ignored speaking directly to BLM, and other issues of interest to the Democrat's most loyal base.
But that said, why limit it to BLM?
I know ... I know ... I'll NEVER be satisfied!

(62,269 posts)PROOF that DNC is IN THE TANK with Republicans and that the BLM movement is merely a shill for the oligarchy!

(31,849 posts)especially, in these highly scripted formats, is what?
Actually, "forums" can/will be more illuminating, as they are more unpredictable.
jfern
(5,204 posts)and they're not on the stage at the same time. But I don't know if that's the format here.

(31,849 posts)except the republican "values" thing has had a panel of participants, with a question asked and plenty of dialogue among the participants ... Which for me is more useful than a series of scripted, and predictable, questions ... allowing the participant to give, largely, unchallenged, non-answers.

(62,269 posts)They don't technically have a venue or anything like that. But if this gets pressure and a lot of press we can get someone to host it. As of now they only have the DNC's blessing. Hopefully the DNC comes out and actually hosts it somewhere.

(3,580 posts)Even though it wasn't a debate, I watched it. It changed my opinion about 2 candidates who I decided I would never vote for based on their responses to lgbt issues. Edwards and Richardson were awful. Gravel and kucinich were terrific on that issue but I had other reasons for not supporting them. Obama was pretty good but had some tortured response about his faith. Hillary had a similar position as Obama but was less uncomfortable answering the questions. So I wrote off Richardson and Edwards. I wanted to like Edwards but after that forum, debate whatever I couldn't stand the guy.
So I hope they all attend the blm forum it may be more enlightening than a debate.

It's great to have BLM front and center and with a potential op to ask pointed questions of those candidates with sufficient courage to show up!
