Hillary Clinton won the afternoon with the help of Katy Perry, but the evening belonged to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who gave a barnstorming performance to the Iowa activists most likely to participate in the state's first-in-the nation caucus on February.
A democratic socialist with no name ID when he began, Sanders has had an uphill climb in the race against establishment favorite Clinton. His performance at tonight's Jefferson-Jackson dinner, the official 100-day count down until the caucus may not be enough to do the trick.
But it's been done before, he reminded his audience tonight, in 2008, when Clinton was also favored to win.
'Just to remember,' he said, 'about eight years ago, all the political experts talked about how another Democratic candidate for president just couldn't win. He was unelectable. You remember that guy? What's his name? Oh, it's President Obama.'

(15,472 posts)Misrepresenting the Debate like it was anything more than Bernie taking the High road , shows that " Desperate Dismissal " isn't working anymore, and hopefully the next Debate will be more issues oriented .

Whatever.

(19,877 posts)Actual policy proposals. Actual union endorsements. Actual party endorsements. Actual endorsements from civil rights heros like John Lewis and Gloria Steinem. Actual experience sticking her foot firmly inside republican assholes.

(3,146 posts)I think we're all in agreement that the GOP needs a good strong kick there, and I think Bernie has done his part to stick his foot there throughout his career. The reason he hasn't gotten the endorsements from the establishment is because he's not the establishment. That's too risky for a lot of the establishment to go and endorse him. It was the same case for Barack back in 2007. But Bernie speaks to me an people like me about the changes we want to see. While I appreciate your support of Hillary, I hope you understand my support of Bernie

This 65 yr old woman who would have loved to see a woman president in her lifetime will never vote for HRC. Never. She's a crumbs and leftovers Democrat. That so many think that's good enough is sad.

(14,255 posts)Are you upset because everybody does not agree with you? Supporting a candidate is a personal choice. This will get settled when the voting begins, after all. Supporters of various candidates being a bit peevish because everybody else does not support their candidate, do not accomplish anything at all.
thesquanderer
(11,991 posts)The thing about these endorsements, as someone else pointed out, is that HRC is the safe bet there. If, for example, someone in congress endorses HRC, and BS wins, there are no consequences. But if someone endorses BS and (as expected) HRC wins, they have knocked themselves out of favor with the President. So that's a more difficult endorsement to consider.
And BTW, BS has plenty of actual policy proposals. (See https://berniesanders.com/issues/ )

P.S.: What you see as "yelling" is the manifestation of being passionate on the issues. Of course some can't be expected to recognize it as such.

(131,102 posts)'Martin O'Malley, Clinton's only remaining challenger in the race aside from Sanders, also had a strong night, earning applause from sections outside his own on multiple occasions throughout his remarks.
O'Malley took a not-so-subtle jab at Clinton for her flip-flopping on high-profile issues tonight, as well.
'Thomas Jefferson once said, in matters of fashion, swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock." In these fast changing times, America needs a President who will stand like a rock,' he said.
The crowd went wild, as he plowed on and said 'a weather vane shifts its position every time the winds change. Effective leaders do not.'
'I know who I am, I know what I believe, and I am willing to fight for it,' he said.'

(34,119 posts)At least one I don't have to go looking for, although they are probably all over DU in various threads. I appreciate this and I appreciate you for your strength and honest support of O'Malley. There is still a long way to go isn't there? You never know what could happen.
Thanks!

(34,119 posts)But, gosh I hate to say it but....wasn't he yelling a little too much? shhhhhhh
He did a great job. I can't think we would suffer at all with him in office. I think the other two just sucked all the air out of the room because there is no real reasonable reason he is not doing better.
Thanks so much! Onward we go!
elleng
(131,102 posts)He HAD to 'yell,' no other way, AND he had to raise their 'bad' policies and 'friends,' THAT is why we NEED him! NO WAY we would 'suffer' with him in office; we'll THRIVE!
ONWARD!

(34,119 posts)just in case you did not see all the carrying on about how Sanders makes everyone feel screamed at I threw that in as a joke. Raising policy issues and differences in doing things are the only ways to distinguish yourself. It has to be done. If not we would be looking at 3 candidates saying exactly the same thing and voting on delivery or looks. I fail to understand how that can be called bashing by any measure here on DU. Fair game, they know it and we should. I was waiting for the weathervane comment but still burst out laughing when he said it. He has guts, lots and lots of them.
I would be fine with him there. Of course I would love it to be Bernie but O'Malley would be great.
elleng
(131,102 posts)Kind of thought it was a joke from you, and at the same time vary glad MO'M raised his voice in a way to be HEARD. And you are absolutely right, raising policy issues to distinguish oneself is ESSENTIAL, THAT's why I'm here! The distinctions are CRITICAL!

(306 posts)The polls are the reason Hillary will be President, and besides Katy Perry handing her a POTUS necklace really seals the deal , don't be mad... How can you deny that !!!! I mean after all she told the big banks they should... "CUT IT OUT!"
Sorry Bernie ... I tried... I really did.... but in the face of these overwhelming odds I'm afraid... you are totally un-electable... sigh. I Guess my vote is just one among many that will have to called wasted. How could i be so short sighted... ??

(39,961 posts)the thought that they might not get a Clinton or a Bush after all. They won't get another Bush, Republicans find him as detestable as everybody else. Clinton is running a campaign where she seems oblivious to the ire Wall Street and DC enablers have garnered.
It's going to be fun. Being an insider isn't going to help any candidate this season, and it is beautiful to watch.
