Column: Is Bernie Sanders an Eisenhower Republican?

The new Republican Party has turned so far hard right, that Bernie Sanders may now be considered an Eisenhower Republican.

This question was raised on a political blog. We seldom hear from other countries about our politics, and, when we do, we pay no attention, or, we make snide remarks because we believe they are meddling.

One response from a young woman from Australia caught my attention:

“I am an Australian (in Australia) and we are all following Bernie here. He is just a normal left leaning politician here - nothing radical about him at all.

The rest of your Democratic candidates we would consider Republicans here. (Hillary would not be permitted to continue as a politician here - voter protest would have ended her career years ago.)

I was pretty clear in my thoughts about the Che image wearing a Sanders shirt. I am pretty confident it was put together by a rwinger. See. We can agree on some things. I won't even associate Sanders supporters with that crap.

also supported social activities.(EPA) After that, I can't remember any legislation for assisting domestic needs supported by Republicans.
They were always in full support of invasions and war with exemptions for themselves. Plus their always love of getting on their knees to the rich.

Even though I despised Nixon in war and domestic spying, domestically he was pretty good and was a Keynesian like myself. But his impeachment was the correct thing to do even though today, it wouldn't even be considered by Third Way Democrats.

That was when the GOp said goodbey to its liberal roots (believe it or not: the GOP was cobbled together from, among other parties, the old Liberal Party of the USA.)

Maybe some cultural heritage from the dying breed of Liberal Republicans has been carrried over into Sanders's platform. It would explain why he has much more appeal across party lines than Clinton.

If you are in for a little bit of ironic history:

Vermont is one of the two states that NEVER went for Roosevelt. (The other one is Maine.)
