about capitalism vs socialism.
I seriously hope Bernie accepts his challenge because what many fail to realize, Bernie isn't a socialist (seen quite a few on here claim that he is as well) but rather a "Democratic Socialist".
This would be a great way for Bernie to explain to America what this actually means seeing as how many are so uninformed or misinformed.

Sen. Rand Paul challenged Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday to a one-on-one debate on the merits of capitalism versus socialism, describing himself and Sanders as "really the diametric opposites of viewpoints in our country."
"We've been saying what a fun, dramatic, and informative debate it would be if Bernie Sanders and I could have an hour-long debate," said Paul during an interview with Iowa radio station WHO NewsRadio 1040.
"Can you imagine," he continued, "debating over what rights are versus what obligations are, and debating socialism versus capitalism?"
The two presidential candidates represent the ideological extremes of today's Republican and Democratic parties -- Paul, on the Republican side, is an avowed libertarian, while Sanders, running for the Democratic nomination, is a self-described democratic socialist -- and have premised their presidential bids on the need for a shift in their respective parties' philosophies.
Besides staking claims to ideas outside the political mainstream and serving as colleagues in the Senate, however, the two have very little in common.

(16,423 posts)Social-democracy has a successful track-record of several decades in several countries. What's the track-record of libertarianism?
Germany's economy is based on a model called "social market economy", designed to be halfway between capitalism and socialism. (Basically capitalism with a shit-ton of regulations.)
And Germany has had 3 social-democratic governments so far.
And guess what?
No apocalypse happened.
And guess what?
Unions were so strong and wages so high that there wasn't even a need to set a legal minimum-wage.
Germany has paid sick-days.
Germany has 28 paid vacation-days per year.
Germany has paid pregnancy-leave for mothers before and after the child-birth. And legal protection against being fired and replaced.
Germany also has pregnancy-leave for fathers after the child-birth.
Germany has single-payer health-insurance. And a network of health-insurances that offer the most basic health-insurance for cheap.
Germany has postbanking.
Germany has a network of banks that explicitly invest locally.
Germany has strict regulations on political donations and lobbying AND enforces them.

(80 posts)This is the type of debates we need. Real ideological debates. Preferably have it nationally televised be on the 4 Networks and the 24 hour cable channels. Fox, msnbc, cnn, cnbc, hln, AL jazeera, cspan, and maybe some like MTV and USA.

(30,481 posts)This is a desperation move by him as he has no shot. He thinks he can win Sanders supporters over that he has lost, and gain some others. It won't work Paul. Sanders is just light years ahead of you.
