O'Malley is best choice for president

To the editor:

For some reason, the best candidate for president is flying under most people's radar. I hope to change that. Martin O'Malley has an extraordinary record of accomplishments as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland that make him eminently qualified to be leader of our country.

O'Malley has shown his commitment to transparency and accountability in government by implementing CitiStat and StateStat, cutting-edge systems for tracking government that won Harvard's Innovations in American Government Award. He served as co-chairman of the National Governors Association's homeland security and public safety committee and has served as an external advisor to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Advisory Council. In Baltimore, he showed common-sense fiscal leadership, achieving the city's first budget surplus in decades and cutting property taxes to the lowest level in 30 years. Under his leadership, Maryland made sweeping investments in public safety, college education, affordable health care, and economic growth, and at the same time recovered 100 percent of the jobs lost during the national recession; one of only seven states to maintain a AAA bond rating.

O'Malley is a forward thinker, and unlike most of the other candidates, has detailed plans for rebuilding the American Dream. At MartinOMalley.com you can find his vision for running this country, including policy plans on addiction treatment, gun safety, Social Security, debt-free college, campaign finance reform, foreign policy, trade agreements, clean energy, immigration reform and many others.

I've been following Martin O'Malley over the past several years and continue to be impressed with his straight talk and his vision for this country. That's why I'm proud to support him for president.

Betsy Burtis
