According to data reviewed by TIME, the Sanders campaign appears to have obtained files with lists of voters that the Clinton campaign had cultivated in 10 early states including Iowa and New Hampshire.
Beyond simply reviewing the data, the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information. According to the logs, the Sanders staff created from scratch no fewer than 24 listsconsisting entirely of data pulled down from the Clinton campaigns databaseand saved them to their personal folders. . . .
We were informed that our proprietary data was breached by Sanders campaign staff in 25 searches by four different accounts and that this data was saved into the Sanders campaign account, said spokesman Brian Fallon. We are asking that the Sanders campaign and the DNC work expeditiously to ensure that our data is not in the Sanders campaigns account and that the Sanders campaign only have access to their own data.
http://time.com/4155185/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-data/
Yet naturally this is all Clinton's fault since she, in her omnipotence, forced the Sanders' campaign to harvest data. She also forced them to not bother collecting voter information or register voters like every other campaign does so that one month prior to the Iowa caucus they would feel compelled to take data from another campaign. Or perhaps it's her fault for having the nerve to object to illegal data harvesting, refusing to recognize how outrageous it is to expect the Bernie campaign to adhere to the laws and rules of mere mortals.

(13,877 posts)lickin' their chops. So, who shall we choose...maybe Cruz? He seems to be the closest.
Or, we could do Kumbaya right now and move on. Both sides have big holes in the story. Could either be no harm no foul, or we're both guilty. Either would work, and carry on.
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)Yeah, Cruz is probably going to win the REPUBLICAN Primary in Iowa. But we are DEMOCRATS, so we have a different primary and Cruz is not running in that one. Get it? So that is kind of a non-issue right now.
The important thing is to resolve this so that both campaigns get what they need to carry on. Clinton needs assurances that her data has not been stolen. Since it is now evident that it WAS downloaded, and by several sources, so that is reasonable. And Sanders needs his VAN records so he can run his GOTV. Fuck kumbaya, this is real business, and both sides have legitimate issues that need to be addressed. They can do it fast unless Sanders is hiding more dirt.

(14,274 posts)The majority of rushed posts yesterday were people trying to invent conspiracy theories. I know you don't like to hear the "CT" thingy, but that's all it's been for almost 24 hours now. It really is kind of sad to watch what some supporters have had to put themselves through in order to defend someone they thought was infallable. It's only human nature to lash out. It will get better in time.

Perhaps Conflict of interest does equate a Conspiracy Theory...but there are names, positions, former political pals awash at that company, so it probably doesn't qualify for a CT as there are too many facts the public can now be aware of and view.
See, I'm not "some supporters". So there you have it. Take your case to those you referred to above.

I'm almost on Team Who Gives a F### after reading all this crap. Our girl Hillary can't keep herself out of the news...now owning the IT company via ex-aides and staffers that have access to all the data. That's a Fox, to me. The rest, yes, were hens running around.

(2,522 posts)I do wonder why the Sanders campaign escalated this by filing a lawsuit. Maybe they think, plausibly, that the DNC is out to make them look bad by giving info to reporters.
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...because DWS and the DNC were in breach of their contract, which allowed 10 days after an incident for the campaign to rectify the situation, before the DNC could pull the data. This is spelled out explicitly in the contract.
The escalation occurred when DWS and the DNC publicized the incident.
Also, they filed a lawsuit because right now is a crucial period in the campaign, right before the next debate and less than 2 months before the first primary. They were being hamstrung, and in a way that was not compliant with the contract they signed.
Looks to me like filing that lawsuit was exactly the right move. It had the desired effect, eh?

(11,243 posts)DNC's fault for running a sloppy show. Bernie Sanders campaign's fault for doing it in the first place and then doubling down on the BS. Winner here? GOP hopefuls who can point and laugh at our little clown car drama. Oh well, at least we don't have Donald Trump spouting racist rhetoric and making kissy faces at Putin to explain. There's that....
The Sanders campaign said on Thursday night that only one of its staffers was involved in viewing the Clinton campaigns data, but it became clear on Friday morning that multiple Sanders campaign staffers improperly accessed Clinton data.
In addition, the Sanders campaign has said that it did not download or retain any of the Clinton campaigns data, and Weaver reiterated that claim on Friday afternoon at a press conference in Washington. This campaign does not possess any data, does not retain any data and does not want any data, said Weaver.
But the records from the NGP VAN software indicate that Sanders staffers did in fact save data to its own folders.

(53,072 posts)Corporations cannot donate to candidates. And the fact is Sanders has already fired the data director.
As I said in my OP, nothing is ever Sanders' fault. I suppose imagining every inconvenient fact is part of some grand conspiracy theory makes you feel better, but it won't broaden Sanders' support. That sort of strategy is guaranteed to relegate a candidate to the fringe. Most voters care to some extent about facts and evidence, not just personalities.

(251 posts)think it's odd that someone would do something that is so highly questionable but then leave such a clear trail of evidence? A very strong argument could be made that Sander's national data director would know evidence of unauthorized access would be logged and noticed and tied back to the campaign.
Apparently these logs are like a huge sign screaming in day-glo paint "Look at me, I was here!", about the same as leaving your driver's license at the store you just robbed.

(9,527 posts)I work in IT, my coworkers work in IT and some of them can't operate an Excel sheet, some of them can't stop getting viruses, some of them have claimed to been working remotely but didn't realize that their log ins can be tracked and when they put in 40 hours but didn't log in to their computer, oops.
Even high up people don't always really fundamentally get computers and just how specific tracking can get. Look at the guy running Silk Road. Ross Ulbricht had multiple technical degrees and the know how to set up an "anonymous" site on the dark web. And yet I know his name and he was sentenced to life in prison. He took significant steps to avoid detection, but in the end, it's really really really hard to be anonymous online.

It was a bit awkward, but I had to let him know how computers worked and that I had seen his searches and sites. We were both embarrassed, but it never happened again. He explained that a friend had told him how to get to "those sites" and he never did it again on our home computer.
Maybe there's a point here...maybe not. Was it my fault? Was it his fault? We decided it was a learning experience. I hope, for our party and perhaps our country's sake, this is how this goes with this current debacle.

(13,877 posts)up with that SH##. But keep trying to conflate it to being Bernie's fault...give it your best shot because this one doesn't do it. Had he tried to hide it first, yes. But that was not a fact...this time or the last time. See it's the Second Time Bernie's people have had to notify the conflict of interest folk that there was a glitch. And how do we know it wasn't "breached"by the other side? Maybe the investigation will tell.
So, I see conflict of interest vs. two reports of glitches. The screen shot of the data and times hardly rose to the level of illegal, any more than failing to fix the glitches and shutting down the data. That too, for a common person like me, speaks volumes. Like it could happen...snap.
I hope Bernie moves his data, if possible...and does it very publicly.
