I think there's a certain amount of projection going on.

You see, the thing is, it's not pandering if you believe it. If you tell a friend that they look nice today, and you really mean it, then you're not trying to butter them up, you're just being nice. What the people who are making a fuss over this silliness are saying is that if they were saying it, it would be insincere, and so they just naturally anyone else who says it must be as well.
