January 6, 2016
The Seafarers International Union is proud to endorse Hillary Clinton for President of the United States. Based on many years of working with us to promote a strong U.S. Merchant Marine and to protect workers rights, we are confident that Secretary Clinton is the best choice to lead our nation forward.
Hillary Clinton has unfailingly fought for Americas working families, including during her service as United States Senator from New York and as Secretary of State. She has always been an ardent supporter of American Mariners and the U.S.-flag maritime industry. She has long been on record as an outspoken, effective backer of the Jones Act, the Maritime Security Program, and our nations cargo preference laws.
Just as importantly, Secretary Clinton clearly values the importance, service, and historic reliability of the men and women who constitute the U.S. Merchant Marine, also known as Americas fourth arm of defense. Her acknowledgements of the U.S. Merchant Marines proud tradition since the nations founding of unbroken commitment to American economic and national security reflect a genuine appreciation of what we mean to America.
Our union traditionally does not take party affiliation into consideration when backing a candidate for office. We have friends in both major political parties, and we have always lived by the principle that we support those who support the maritime industry along with workers rights. In this case, party affiliation once again is not a factor at all. Secretary Clinton is unsurpassed in her strong backing of our core issues and values.
The Seafarers International Union looks forward to working with Secretary Clinton through the rest of the 2016 campaign season and for many years to come. She has our enthusiastic support.
It should be noted that they are headquartered in Sanders' (and my) home town of BROOKLYN, NEW YORK!

Try as people might, one can't change where he/she were born and grew up.

(6,282 posts)If that association you are making is meaningful, why is there no home state advantage for Sanders in NY? And yet NH polls are given a discounted importance due to the "Favorite Son" of a state he has never lived in nor was born in.
Sure seems peculiar to me.

Marine workers are unionized, as they should be. SIU is the major player in non-officer mariners across most of the marine footprint here in the states.

(24,333 posts)not so much for the endorsement as I did not know this group existed
I learned what the SIU is and represents

(6,437 posts)They're a very diverse union on to of everything else (Their Great Lakes hall is right by Dearborn Michigan, resulting in almost 33% of all mariners on the Great Lakes being Muslim.).
Good people.

(1,090 posts)former member of SUI, this doesn't surprise me in the least. Unfortunately a lot of guys in my union are tRump worshipers. I mean WTF? a lot of union members in the rank and file of both of these unions are not fond of HRC or the dems again WTF? I've been trying to spread the word on Bernie and if not Bernie then HRC if she wins and trying again to pass the word that the TPP will cost us our jobs and our fleets and the rethugs are the bad guys but

(50,254 posts)No wonder their executive board would endorse a conservative, pro "free trade" candidate.
As surprising as the Teamsters endorsing Nixon and Reagan.

(30,250 posts)My church bakes cookies every year for the Seafarers for Christmas. They provide the tins and we fill them. This year I made Nutella cookies. There are many sailors who are far from home during the holidays. The SIU gives them care packages and provides them with support while their ships are at port. My area includes the ports of New York and Newark (NJ).
