that the research proposal I am currently working on has to do with the backlash men may face for displaying non-stereotypic behavior in the workplace.

Funny because of all the male vs female, feminist vs Men issues in META and Du generally

1. You should have seen how I was ridiculed for my inept picks for the basketball brackets.

Apparently, picking UCLA to win the championship was a real long shot.

3. I think it's like anything else in this world

one group pushes for something and the group they are pushing at, pushes back. It doesn't matter what the topic is. Take veganism/vegetarianism... if there is a post in GD about the benefits of the diet, there is a guaranteed group of folks that will push back depending on the strength of the original post. It's always been a heated topic. Same with misogyny on DU... if the women or men point it out, there is immediate pushback. I don't see this behavior changing.

I think it also has to do with personalities... some folks here are just never going to get along and any chance they have at taking jabs at one another seems to be relished.

4. honestly there are about 6 or 7 people overall on both sides who push

in a way that alienates any allies they may otherwise have made


though to be clear i do not think the issues are equal. in no unequivocal words i do want to say that women here (on earth, this country and du) are the lower status group and the less privilege and the more discriminated against group.

i am not drawing a false equivalence in the issues themselves. hope that was clear

5. It was clear to me but I still think

there are always those that are going to push back on the matter. There doesn't appear to be room for compromise at either table. That doesn't help either cause.

6. yup. that and people also refuse to acknowledge privileges that they do enjoy

this includes men who refuse to acknowledge many privileges they have over women, women who refuse to acknowledge any privilege they have over other types of women, and women who refuse to acknowledge that there are narrow issues in which women do get preference (custody battles).

7. There's definitely all types of inequality out in the world

and closing a blind eye to nothing but your own equality does no one, including yourself, any good (You was used in the general sense... isn't it ridiculous that this has to be typed on DU now?)

9. I've really started to think it is all about empathy. Not just this but other issues

the student loan issue, for instance. I think if you have a good ability to empathize it is not possible to think the status quo is good, or be against some sort of relief for those who currently have student loans.

Some empathy is required to understand, and want to do something about, the plight of anyone in a non-privileged situation. I really think it's that simple.

I have exhibited a fair bit of non stereotypical behavior and I'm not sure if I could untangle the associated gender issues from other cultural issues.
