(19 posts)Thank you for this thread, I have a few questions Id like to put to whoever feels qualified enough to answer.
Im very new to US politics so please forgive if these questions seem daft.
- As someone who believes that we should help that need help while those that can should get off their fat arses (can I say that?) and do it I feel the Democrats fit my theories better. Do I have this right.
My father, the great man that he is, says that he prefers Democrats over the Republicans, but doesnt agree 100% with all their policies. He also agrees that I should follow my own beliefs and if I followed (D) then thats cool with him.
The other reason I like the Democrats is because, I believe, Abe Lincoln was one and he went to war over freedom of the Blacks. Im a firm believer in equal rights for all men and women.
Do I have my facts correct so far?
- How serious are Democrats about religion. I was born and brought up a Roman Catholic. Im proud of that and am reluctant to change that, despite various problems (Im new here and dont want to reveal all of my private situation until I get a feel for this forum).
Last night I was shocked (words can not discuss how shocked I am) when I was looking for religious sites where I may re-attempt to explore my religious views and perhaps learn things, and I came across this site http://www.landoverbaptist.net/
The way they treat people and judge them is shocking, but it turns out its a republican site, and doesnt do much to turn me away from the democrats.
The only thing that I can see that is missing is the white pillowcases with eye holes cut out!
So, in short. What do the Democrats stand for and how are they better than the repubicans. The way I see it, its a choice of Obama (who hasnt done a bad job so far imo) and Palin who in her own words describes herself as a pitbull with lipstick!
Feel free to pick anything I say to pieces, Im here to learn.

(26,117 posts)It pokes fun at RW fundamentalism.
You might consider checking out one of DU's religion groups (see Topics on the left and click Religion & Spirituality to expand the list).
There's even a Catholicism group: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1221
So all of the posts are just having fun? Even the newer posts?

(19 posts)Please remember that I know very little about the two US parties (Im based in England), other than what other people tell me.
My Father tells me that because my Sister has Cerebral Palsey it is of more benefit to have a (D) government than anything else.
So, Whats the difference between (D) now and "back in the days"?

(26,117 posts)Currently, the Democratic Party definitely has a better record for helping fellow citizens and finding solutions that benefit the common good.
Here's some info on healthcare in particular from the Dem Party.

In my opinion, democrats are more likely to support policies that benefit everyone in society, while the republicans are more likely to support policies that benefit the wealthy and privileged.
You can learn a lot from reading DU. Check out the Topics on the left - there's lots of information and discussion in the various interest groups.
Thank you for these links, I will most certainly take a read.

(26,117 posts)I would think people who post there do so in the spirit of satire - but I suppose it's possible that someone could have stumbled upon the forum, assumed it's real, and posted seriously. People believe all kinds of whack-a-doodle stuff, I suppose.
I hope you have fun here!

(19 posts)How would I go about deleting my forum account? It seems Ive been blocked for asking a question in the LGBT section which has obviously caused offence to someone (Certainly not intentional). Trouble is I cant reply in the thread (bocked) and cant send a private message due to message count being too low. I would like to explain my point further as it seems that someone has jumped in without considering my question further.
Its a shame really as I have a Lesbian daughter. As a Non lesbian myself I can not fully understand that point of view without asking further questions. We learn by getting answers to the questions we ask. However, as a Post Op transexual I would also like to be able to talk to people in a similar situation to myself.
Obviously if my questions are not welcome in what is probably the most important section of the forum, to me, then there really is no point me being here.

(21,642 posts)1) You can't delete your account, but you can log out and walk away.
2) If you'd like to have a discussion about your block from the LGBT group now, you could start a thread in Meta-discussion, giving a heads up to the hosts that you'd like to discuss the issue but can't send a PM yet.
3) If you don't want to discuss the issue in Meta now, you could choose to stick around DU, participating in other groups and forums, and giving people a chance to know you while you gradually accumulate enough posts to send a PM, and then discuss your blocking via DUmail.
Can I be sure that if I take option 2 that the relevant person will see it?
The way I see it I can see *possibly* that it could be taken the wrong way but on the basis that I threw in questions and not "matter of fact opinion" I feel that I was blocked in haste. In fact the person who blocked me asked me to explain my actions, and Id like to know how a blocked user can in fact explain their actions. Seems a bit unfair to me.
