I wonder if these things are related?

I've also had the problem you describe in your OP using the 'link' html code; especially with the long URLs. Some punctuation appears to break the links.

When using the [link:web address|text] tag, certain punctuation in the web address will cause it to not work and some punctuation in the text will cause it to not work properly. I think I have documented the majority of link problems (and their workarounds) in this post.

You can still use photos for the text to make a photo clickable. That should work for a normal webpage, but if you are trying to link to a picture or video there is an extra step that must be taken to make it work. For pictures, replace the period before the extension with %2E. For YouTube videos, use the standard YouTube link format and replace the question mark with %3F. For Vimeo, insert %3 in front of the video number in the URL. Examples and results:
