(3,732 posts)Hi, there - I came to Democratic Underground because I needed help getting 50 signatures on a MoveOn.org petition pertaining to welfare issues. While the specific issues pertain to Oakland, CA, I think the situation would be an eye-opener to anyone who has ever made snap judgments about "people on welfare" based on what politicians say about them. Here is my petition.

However, when I tried to post a thread, I get an error message that I have to reply to people first. I'm not sure how many replies, and to be honest, I was hoping the issue on this petition would be of enough of interest that people here would want to sign it. But how to get it in front of people if I can't make a thread? Can someone please make a thread for me?
I'm not looking for a million signatures or big publicity - just enough to get this thing in front of my ostensible political representatives. They have all totally blown me off in private email since, being on G.A., I'm not going to be donating to their campaigns in the near future and thus they don't give a fig if I die in the street.

(3,732 posts)so I just have to make 10 B.S. replies here, and no one will ban me for it?
Aw forget it. There is also artificial "time" between posts. T_T
I can see why DU does this to cultivate "real participants" here, but this is a sad way to block out people who need emergency help.
Anyway. Going now.

(205,161 posts)I signed it, so I'm sure that others will, too. I actually belonged to MoveOn long before I ever found DemocraticUnderground. I'm also sure you'll find other topics of interest here, and other discussions on the same one. Stick around!
daredtowork
(3,732 posts)That's kind of you. I'm grateful, really.
It's more of a matter of not feeling like I can stay up that late because of the enforced time delay between posts. I'm on some medications that make me quite sleepy. I just didn't expect this run-around. I get enough of this out of my "real world" life as you can see. >.<
Rhiannon12866
(205,161 posts)The time delay is relatively new, and I didn't have to deal with it when I first joined in 2003, LOL. You'll be surprised how quickly posts can add up. I never thought I'd get past 100. And I understand about the meds, have been on those, myself. Get some sleep and come back. I don't think you'll be sorry. DUers are the most supportive folks on the internets...

(3,732 posts)Okay, I'll just bookmark this page and come back later. It's just a shame asking for help on this has to become a multi-day endeavor.
It's not that I don't appreciate the efforts of Democratic Underground - after all, this is where I thought to come. It's just that my life is filled - perhaps drained is a better word - by so much bureaucratic stuff already. I can't join more discussion groups. I did come here just to ask for help on this one thing, and I thought my petition would be of interest here. Sorry if that comes across as "using", but I think of it more as exactly what it is: asking for help on this one particular thing, of common interest to many Democrats.

(205,161 posts)I have no doubt that you've come to the right place and will get more support with your petition. I don't know how long the post delay thing lasts, but I don't think it's very long. Nobody can fault you for being frustrated, especially since you're tired and pressed for time, but there are numerous advantages to sticking around here, mostly the timeliness of the breaking news here. I've been here since January of 2003 and I still learn something new here everyday. Sleep well and see you soon...

(3,732 posts)I think this is number 5, but I have appointments all through the day, and won't be able to get back to this until this evening.
Still wish this where was a place I could just bring my petition. Maybe I'm too old to be seen like Bat Kid.

(3,732 posts)Back from yet another incredibly bureaucratic day. 4 appointments in a row.

(3,732 posts)I can imagine the troll armies deployed to inundate DU with fake "comments" on every news cycle. I can see how precautions should be taken, though I'm not sure these measures will actually inhibit those trolls. :/

(3,732 posts)Any suggestions about what topic I should post my petition under once I'm able to post a thread?

(28,749 posts)When you post it let me know I can help keep it kicked (up at the top).

(3,732 posts)Thank you again for offering to boost it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025420117
I have to leave tending it in a bit - ironically I have to go to a workshop on work rules for SSI. >.< But I don't think it will go on for more than hour, and it's being held at the Department of Rehabilitation, which is close to where I live.
daredtowork
(3,732 posts)About which topic category would be the best for my petition. Any suggestions?
