SOS of Colorado Finds....14 Illegal Voters

after claiming there were thousands.

Yesterday, Secretary of State Scott Gessler celebrated the end of voter registration with a press conference announcing the success of his campaign encouraging residents to sign up -- more on that below. But first, the results of the other Gessler effort, which focused on weeding out illegal voters. After working with the federal government and a facing an onslaught of negative headlines, Gessler's office has a count from across the state of those removed from voter rolls: fourteen.

We reported last month that in Denver County, Gessler's latest anti-fraud initiative resulted in four illegal voters being removed. And on Tuesday, the final day of registration, Scott Gessler spokesman Rich Coolidge gave us numbers for counties across the state: Three were removed in Adams County, three in El Paso County, two in Garfield County, one in La Plata County, one in Jefferson County and the aforementioned four in Denver. That makes fourteen.

Let's do a quick recap of the process that led to the removal of these fourteen individuals -- the result of Gessler's most recent initiative to clean up voter rolls.

Back in August, Gessler sent letters to nearly 4,000 registered voters asking them to prove they are citizens. The letter recepients were potentially illegal voters, because they had at some point presented proof of non-citizenship, such as using a green card or VISA to get a license at the DMV. Critics at the time argued that the letters might intimidate voters and could very well be sent to legal voters who had recently become citizens.

Later that month, Gessler's office announced that of the 3,903 who received the original letters, 1,011 voters moved with no forwarding address and 482 successfully affirmed their citizenship. Additionally, sixteen voluntarily withdrew their registrations. (We spoke to one legal citizen who got the letter and was not happy about it). http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2012/10/scott_gessler_illegal_colorado_voters_fourteen.php

Home From Will-i-am Rally

Big turnout for Obama at local park near DU - Will started out with us, but soon disappeared.

Romney turnout was meh...a big truck with Romney signs and flags of Colorado, USA, Israel and country music blaring kept driving up and down University Blvd.

Everything was fenced off, but MSNBC had a big sign and stage, but I didn't see CNN or FOX anywhere.

Editorial: CO Secretary of State Gessler owes some apologies

The way in which Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler has attempted to rid the state's voter rolls of non-citizens has been controversial and disappointing.

Colorado should expect better.

Gessler sent letters to nearly 4,000 voters, calling their status into question, before he got access to a federal database that allowed him to check citizenship.

Once he ran some of those names through the database, he did not find any non-citizens on the voter rolls.

In the meantime, thousands of people, the vast majority of them Democrats and unaffiliated voters, have gotten an official letter from an elected official asking them to prove their status. On Thursday, the secretary's office announced that 16 who got letters withdrew their registrations.

Critics are screaming at the top of their lungs that Gessler, a Republican, is using his power to intimidate voters whose political affiliations are different than his in the run-up to the November elections. Those accusations are not easily dismissed.

A Guide to Mass Shootings In America

A Guide to Mass Shootings in America
There have been at least 60 in the last 30 years—and most of the killers got their guns legally.

Update, 8/24/12: At least one person was killed and eight others wounded in a shooting outside the Empire State Building in New York City on Friday morning. The 60 mass shootings we've documented below involve at least four deaths in each case (see our criteria below, with additional explanation here) but represent only a small fraction of America's gun violence.

It's perhaps too easy to forget how many times this has happened. The horrific mass murder at a movie theater in Colorado on July 20 and another at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin on August 5 are the latest in an epidemic of such gun violence over the last three decades. Since 1982, there have been at least 60 mass murders* carried out with firearms across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. We've mapped them below, including details on the shooters' identities, the types of weapons they used, and the number of victims they injured and killed.

Weapons: Of the 137 guns possessed by the killers, more than three quarters were obtained legally. The arsenal included dozens of assault weapons and semiautomatic handguns. (See charts below.) Just as Jeffrey Weise used a .40-caliber Glock to massacre students in Red Lake, Minnesota, in 2005, so too did James Holmes when blasting away at his victims in a darkened movie theater.

The killers: Just under half of the cases involved school or workplace shootings (11 and 18, respectively); the other 31 cases took place in locations including shopping malls, restaurants, government buildings, and military bases. The average age of the killers was 35. Only one of them was a woman. (See Goleta, Calif., in 2006.) Forty two of them were white males. The youngest killer was a mere 11 years old. (See Jonesboro, Ark., in 1998.) Explore the map for further details—we do not consider the map to be all-inclusive, but based on the criteria we used to identify mass murders, we believe that we've produced one of the most comprehensive rundowns available on this particular type of traumatic violence. (Mass murders represent only a sliver of America's overall gun violence.) For a timeline listing all the cases on the map, including photos of the killers,
