Germanwings Pilot Makes Emotional Speech Before Hamburg-Cologne Flight Takes Off

http://www.bustle.com/articles/72515-germanwings-pilot-makes-emotional-speech-before-hamburg-cologne-flight-takes-off

Following the Germanwings crash Tuesday that killed 150 people, boarding another Germanwings plane soon after the disaster sounds a little terrifying. On Wednesday, a Germanwings pilot assured passengers that they’d return home safely on a flight from Hamburg to Cologne. With everyone still disturbed by the plane’s crash into the French Alps the day before, the pilot’s sincerity and candor made one passenger feel much better about the ensuing flight and she posted about the interaction on Germanwings’ Facebook.

In the post, Britta Englisch admits that she had “mixed feelings” about flying with Germanwings the morning after copilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately downed Flight 4U 9525, and she probably wasn’t the only one. There hasn’t been a large commercial airline crash intentionally brought about by the pilot since 1999, and this incident shocked the world.

Here is a translation of Englisch’s post to Germanwings’ Facebook:

Yesterday morning at 8:40 a.m., I got onto a Germanwings flight from Hamburg to Cologne with mixed feelings. But then the captain not only welcomed each passenger separately, he also made a short speech before take off. Not from the cockpit — he was standing in the cabin. He spoke about how the accident touched him and the whole crew. About how queasy the crew feels, but that everybody from the crew is voluntarily here. And about his family and that the crew have a family and that he is going to do everything to be with his family again tonight. It was completely silent. It was completely silent. And then everybody applauded. I want to thank this pilot. He understood what everybody was thinking. And that he managed to give, at least me, a good feeling for this flight.

(Breaking): Astronaut begins U.S. history-making mission (a year in space)

Source: CNN

(CNN)NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has started a trip to the record books.

He plans to spend 342 days on the International Space Station -- the longest stretch of time any U.S. astronaut has spent in space.

Kelly lifted off Friday aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket that launched from Kazakhstan. The rocket is expected to dock at the ISS about 9:36 p.m. ET, with hatches between the Soyuz and the space station opening at about 11:15 p.m. ET, NASA said.

Kelly will stay twice as long as any U.S. astronaut has ever stayed on the space station, giving scientists a chance to study how the human body responds to long-duration space flights. On Earth, scientists will perform parallel studies on Scott Kelly's identical twin brother, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.

"It's a lot of fun," Kelly said at a media briefing in January. "Space station is a magical place."

Update: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/french-media-report-plane-crash-alps-148-aboard-29862228

French President Francois Hollande says no survivors are likely in the Alpine crash of a passenger jet carrying 148 people.

The Germanwings passenger jet crashed Tuesday in the French Alps region as it traveled from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, French officials said. Eric Ciotti, the head of the regional council, said search-and-rescue teams were headed to the crash site at Meolans-Revels.

In a live briefing Tuesday, Hollande said the area of the crash was remote and it was not clear whether anyone on the ground had been hurt. Hollande said it was probable that a number of the victims are German.

Throw Back Saturday, Politics Edition - 1988

Quayle: Three times that I've had this question — and I will try to answer it again for you, as clearly as I can, because the question you're asking is, "What kind of qualifications does Dan Quayle have to be president," "What kind of qualifications do I have," and "What would I do in this kind of a situation?" And what would I do in this situation? [...] I have far more experience than many others that sought the office of vice president of this country. I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency. I will be prepared to deal with the people in the Bush administration, if that unfortunate event would ever occur.

Judy Woodruff: Senator [Bentsen]?

Bentsen: Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. (Prolonged shouts and applause.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senator,_you%27re_no_Jack_Kennedy

Quayle had routinely been comparing himself to Kennedy in his stump speech.

Adviser Susan Estrich recalled in 2004:[3]

Three days [before the debate], in rehearsal, [Bentsen] had been shocked when the Dan Quayle stand-in compared himself to Jack Kennedy. Does he really do that, Bentsen asked at the time. He did. Can I say something, Bentsen, ever the gentleman, asked us. We nodded enthusiastically. So as we sat backstage, and heard Quayle compare himself to Kennedy, I turned to the key supporters gathered in the holding room and said, "Here it comes." And it did.

In a mock debate with Dennis Eckart, Bentsen used the casual remark "you're no Jack Kennedy and George Bush is no Ronald Reagan."[4]

I miss ol' Senator Bentsen!!
