NBC’s David Gregory Misquotes Obama, Falsely Claims President Said ‘Al Qaeda Has Been Defeated’

NBC’s David Gregory Misquotes Obama, Falsely Claims President Said ‘Al Qaeda Has Been Defeated’
By Judd Legum on Sep 30, 2012 at 12:11 pm

This morning on Meet The Press, David Gregory twice asserted that, in May, President Obama declared that “al Qaeda has been defeated.” Gregory used that claim to advance a theory that Obama was simply not concerned enough about al Qaeda in advance of the attack on the American embassy in Libya. Here’s the transcript:

GREGORY: The President has said as recently as May of this year that al Qaeda has not had a chance to rebuild, that al Qaeda has been defeated. There is an election on, as we’ve been talking about, and the President’s challenger said plain and simple, the President failed to level with the American people and call this a terrorist attack, because you had to be concerned about another terrorist attack from al Qaeda in the Middle East after the President said that al Qaeda had been defeated.

snip...
That is not, however, what Obama said in May. Gregory was apparently referring to an address that Obama delivered from Afghanistan in May on the one year anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death. Here is what Obama said:

And one year ago, from a base here in Afghanistan, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal that I set — to defeat al Qaeda and deny it a chance to rebuild — is now within our reach.

106 Years Old and Voting for President Obama: "Red, White and Blue, Going Forward!"

Gotta vote? Go here: http://OFA.BO/A2adgn

The last time Margaret Harris voted was in 1928—and the next time will be on November 6, 2012 for President Barack Obama. Margaret always encouraged her family to be educated citizens—a family that includes about 88 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She's seen a lot of change living through World War II and the civil rights era. Now she's continuing to move forward by making sure President Obama is re-elected while encouraging her family and friends to do the same.

As Margaret shares:

"Being honest is the most important thing—treating everybody right. Barack Obama is honest and I love him for it. I appreciate him. I know he's looking out for me."

Biden: Days into job, news of $1 trillion deficit

Biden: Days into job, news of $1 trillion deficit

By TAMARA LUSH

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Vice President Joe Biden says that he and President Barack Obama had been on the job less than a week when a top economic adviser told them the country was facing a trillion-dollar budget deficit.

Biden says that Obama replied, "But I haven't done anything yet."

Biden blames the deficit on the previous Bush administration, adding that it "put two wars on a credit card" and gave tax cuts to the wealthy after inheriting a balanced budget and revenue surplus from the Clinton administration.

Biden hammered GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for comments on a leaked video in which Romney describes 47 percent of Americans as paying no federal income tax and believing "they are victims."

Joe Biden accuses Romney, Ryan of deficit hypocrisy

Joe Biden accuses Romney, Ryan of deficit hypocrisy
By Michael A. Memoli
September 29, 2012, 10:56 a.m.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Joe Biden accused Republicans Saturday of hypocrisy over the budget, mocking “how they bleed over the national debt” despite a role in driving it up.

Campaigning in a heavily Republican county in southwest Florida, the vice president specifically criticized Republican counterpart Paul Ryan for rejecting bipartisan proposals that would reduce the deficit, a possible preview of his strategy for their upcoming debate.

In his speech accepting the Republican nomination for vice president, Ryan had criticized President Obama for discarding the recommendations of his own deficit reduction panel, known as Simpson-Bowles.

Biden reminded more than 2,000 supporters at a community center here that Ryan himself was a part of that commission.

“He wouldn’t even vote to let it get to the United States House of Representatives and Senate to vote on it. Why?” Biden said. “Because they will not vote for a single solitary reduction in the debt if it includes one dollar in new taxes for millionaires. Not even one dollar. That’s a fact.”
