On Monday, Dave Furukawa, who is visually impaired, was walking his young son to school along with Simon. As the trio crossed Brownwood Avenue, witnesses saw a car run a stop sign and strike the 80-pound Boxer, then Furukawa.

Bystanders have told the Furukawa family that Simon's protective instinct kicked in, despite injuries that would prove to be fatal.

"What people have said is that Simon either got up or jumped out, and pushed my son out of the path of the car," said Furukawa, who has counted on Simon as his companion and guide for the last four years. "This is true loyalty and courage."

Witnesses lifted Furukawa's 4-year-old son, Will, and took him to his mother. Simon went with them.

"I am writing in hopes that you might be able to help me shine a light on the good, caring, friendly, giving employees of The Home Depot. On Sunday Sept. 15 The Home Depot store located at 1617 N. Carpenter Rd. Modesto fulfilled my son Joshua's 5th Birthday wish. They pulled out all the bells and whistles or should I say hammers and nails for his party. From workshop kits, to the goodie bags, balloons, aprons, and Lego sets for each of the 23 children who attended. To an amazing cake shaped like a hammer with other tools on the side. All the party decorations, a place with air conditioning to hold the party and more presents then a 5 year old Home Depot loving kid could ask for.

"The store manager Kevin and his team went above and beyond to make Joshua's wish a reality. Five years ago Joshua entered in to this world missing 75 - 80% of his skin, a cleft lip and palate, heart problems, kidney problems and NO SWEAT GLANDS. His diagnosis AEC Syndrome Ectodermal Dysplasia.

"When I asked him what he would like to do for his birthday this year, with out hesitation he shouted go to The Home Depot with you and Daddy and brother for a workshop. Simple enough but my husband works every Saturday so we wouldn't be able to do that... In my mind the next best thing would be to buy the workshop kits and host a party at our home. When I emailed customer service they explained that they do not sell those kits but a manager would be calling me in a day or two. Kevin the store manager called and said that his store and team would love to help us make his day something special. What happened next was nothing less then magical!

"Employees pitched in money from their own pockets and each department and purchased gifts that they thought Joshua would like presenting them to him at the party. The store donated all the aprons, workshop kits, decorations, as well as employee time on the clock to set up and decorate the room and help host the party.
