Molly Ivins May 4, 1997: "We didn't realize we were giving them power over us"

Molly Ivins
from: May 4, 1997

AUSTIN, Texas — Of all the stunning moments reported in Bob Reich's new book, "Locked in the Cabinet," perhaps the saddest is an observation made in 1993 by Rep. Marty Sabo of Minnesota, then chairman of the House Budget Committee. Asked why the Democrats in Congress wouldn't fight for working people, Sabo replied: "We're owned by them. Business. That's where the campaign money comes from now. In the 1980s, we gave up on the little guys. We started drinking from the same trough as the Republicans. We figured business would have to pay up because we had the power on the Hill.

"We were right. But we didn't realize we were giving them power over us. And now we have both branches of government, and they have even more power. It's too late now."

The party of Big Money in Washington — that being both of them — has reached a deal on the budget that gives tax cuts to the richest people in the country and cuts programs for the poorest people.

Axelrod: The Question Is Not Whether Romney Played By The Rules

Axelrod: The Question Is Not Whether Romney Played By The Rules

On Meet the Press, Obama campaign senior strategist David Axelrod talked about Romney’s tax returns and the fact that he paid a 13.9% effective tax rate. Asked if Romney broke any rules, Axelrod pushed back. The question is, are the rules right, Axelrod said. And Romney would continue those rules. It’s not right that Romney can make $22 million and pay an effective tax rate as middle income Americans. Just because Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island funds are legal, doesn’t make the tax system right.

Tennessee (GOP State Senator) Bigot: AIDS Caused By One Monkey-Loving Airline Pilot

Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield said:

Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall. My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex…very rarely (transmitted).

Obama? Really?!?!
byhobie1616

I live on Maui. We get a lot of part time residents that own vacation homes or condos. I've made friends with a few and can set my watch by their consistency in returning every year.

One is Jane. She's from Michigan, probably in her mid sixties, a fairly accomplished artist, and a dyed in the wool registered Republican. I saw her for the first time this year at a watering hole down on the beach. Knowing her political leanings I asked if she favored Newtie or Mittens. The answer was a complete surprise.

Jane said, "I'm for Obama. He's done a very good job and he's been treated horribly. My friends all say he sucks but I know better. He'll win by a landslide."

...............................................................

but wait, there's more:

Doc :"I'm very disappointed with Obama, ..

Me: "I am, too.."

Doc: "but Romney is repellent. I could never vote for him."

Me: (some stuff about how even though Obama didn't fight as hard as I'd like he was faced with unprecedented obstruction and breathtaking racism).

Doc(nodding): "The only one of the Republicans who seems reasonable is Santorum (as I said, he's not always well-informed!)."

Me: "Santorum wants to outlaw contraception".

Doc: "really!?!"

Game over.

FOX's Wallace: GOP Debates "All Stupid" People Only Watching "Because They Hope To See A Crash"

Fox’s Wallace says number of GOP debates ‘insane,’ they’re ‘all stupid’

“Why on earth did they think it was good to have nineteen debates?” he asked, saying “they’re all stupid” and that people are only tuning in for the same reason that some people watch high-speed car racing, because they hope to see a crash.

Smoke bombs, tear gas, flash bangs, rubber bullets, and bean bag rounds were used on protesters that never got within 50-100 feet of police lines. Anyone have the contact information to the person supposed to review the Oakland Police and their attacks on their own citizenry?

Martin Bashir Exposes The Great Republican Hoax

BASHIR: Now, it may be that since I was born in Europe I'm a little more sensitive to these things, but in reality this is a massive hoax. Or to use Newt Gingrich's favorite word, the biggest pile of baloney that's ever been served.

Because far from the President wanting to follow Europe, it's actually the Republicans, both those running for President and those already elected to the House who desperately want to follow that continent.

How so? Well, as we know, the global recession which began in 2008, has forced countries to respond in different ways. The President has attempted to stimulate the economy. But others, particularly European nations, have stuck firmly to their believe that austerity is the way to go. And so, they've set about cutting services, demolishing government, reducing the safety net.

And it's this model, as practiced by several European nations, that Republicans like John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney want America to follow.

ROMNEY: As President, I will cut spending --
GINGRICH: -- cut spending -
BOEHNER: -- They elected us to cut spending...
ROMNEY: -- cut spending --

Help me translate Palin's angry-muffin verbiage

“They maybe subscribe such characterization of Newt via words like that, but they don’t subscribe those to say Mitt Romney when he or his surrogates do the same thing,” she said.

“That’s that typical hypocrisy stuff in the media that I’ve lived with over a couple of decades in the political arena. So I’m used to it.”

“But in order to help educate the rest of the American public, I’ll articulate that it is hypocritical of the media to subscribe to one candidate and not another, that kind of angry attack muffin verbiage to one and not the other.”

Newt Gingrich: 'I will go all the way to the convention'

Newt Gingrich: 'I will go all the way to the convention'

Reporting from Port St. Lucie, Fla.— Newt Gingrich, shaking off signs that his campaign is stalling in Florida, pledged to fight for the GOP nomination through the summer.

“I will go all the way to the convention. I expect to win the nomination,” he told reporters after holding a small rally outside the PGA golf museum here. “You just had two national polls that show me ahead. Why don’t you ask Gov. Romney what he will do if he loses since he is behind in both national polls.”

Gingrich had a busy day Saturday, with six events across the state. This comes after a week with two debates, formats that have largely been shining moments for the former House speaker during the campaign – strong performances helped revive his candidacy and drove his win in South Carolina. But he failed to have breakthrough moments in the Florida debates. Gingrich said he was dissatisfied with the face-offs against Mitt Romney.

“You cannot debate somebody who is dishonest. You just can’t. The people say I’m a good debater. I can’t debate somebody who won’t tell the truth,” Gingrich said of Romney, repeating the theme of an advertisement he released Friday.
