Feds agree to seafood import rules aimed at protecting whales, dolphins

Feds agree to seafood import rules aimed at protecting whales, dolphins
Written by The Wisconsin Gazette ,,
January 7th, 2015

The U.S. government, in a recent settlement, agreed to adopt rules ensuring seafood imported into the country meets high standards for protecting whales and dolphins

The regulations will require foreign fisheries to meet the same marine mammal protection standards required of U.S. fishers or be denied import privileges — implementing a 40-year-old provision of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

“The new regulations will force other countries to step up and meet U.S. conservation standards — saving hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins from dying on hooks and in fishing nets around the world,” said Sarah Uhlemann, senior attorney and international program director of the Center for Biological Diversity. “The U.S. government has finally recognized that all seafood consumed in the United States must be ‘dolphin-safe.’ ”

More than 650,000 whales, dolphins and other marine mammals are caught and killed in fishing gear each year, according to the CBD. The animals are “bycatch” of commercial fisheries and either drown outright or are tossed overboard to die.

Talk about "White Privilege"

Fox News anchor and Supreme Court correspondent Shannon Bream reacted to a Paris terror attack by suggesting certain skin tones are more typical of "bad guys" than others.

On the January 7 edition of Fox News' Outnumbered, the panel of hosts discussed the terror attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 12 dead. Co-host Kennedy Montgomery suggested profiling may not always be an effective prevention policy because "sometimes bad guys don't look like bad guys."

Bream echoed the sentiment and wondered whether the ability to identify the skin color of the assailants in Paris would have helped law enforcement in this case. Bream suggested profiling may not be effective in situations where criminals are wearing masks or where the tone of their skin doesn't "look like typical bad guys," apparently implying that certain skin tones should raise red flags for law enforcement:

BREAM: That's my question about these guys. If we know they were speaking unaccented French and they had ski masks on, do we even know what color they were, what the tone of their skin was? I mean, what if they didn't look like typical bad guys? As we define them when we think about terror groups.

Bobby Jindal: Without social issues, Republicans are just ‘cheaper Democrats’

"We should be a party that's proud of our conservative principles. Our country doesn't need two liberal parties," he said. "Not everybody's going to agree with us 100 percent of the time, and that's OK. What the country doesn't want, I think, is a party that's pretending to be something it's not. If all we do is pretend to be cheaper Democrats, we'll never earn the right to be in the majority. Let's stand up for what we believe. Let's be authentic. Let's be sincere. Let's not discriminate. Let's respect people who disagree with us. Let's be bold and specific."

The astrophysicist and TV personality, who fronted Cosmos in 2014, has nabbed a late-night series on National Geographic Channel called Star Talk.

“Cosmos allowed us to share the awesome power of the universe with a global audience in ways that we never thought possible,” said Tyson. “To be able to continue to spread wonder and excitement through Star Talk, which is a true passion project for me, is beyond exciting. And National Geographic Channel is the perfect home as we continue to explore the universe.”

Je suis Charlie, indeed. Unless vous êtes Republican.

Congressional Republicans leapt at the opportunity to criticize Obama for ending the nation's torture policy and for trying to shut down Guantanamo:

Some Republican lawmakers seized on the violence to question the Obama administration’s efforts to end interrogation tactics dubbed by the president as torture and to close the prison facility at Cuba's Guantánamo Bay.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) argued poor policy choices and budget cuts had left national security at risk. [...]

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and others used the Paris attack to question Obama’s pledge to close Gitmo prison.

Cleveland Fiscal Manager cites killing of Tamir Rice in resignation letter

December 17, 2014

Michael McGrath
Director of Public SafetyCity of Cleveland
601 Lakeside Ave, Room 230
Cleveland, OH 44115

Director McGrath-

I would like to inform you that I am resigning from my position as Public Safety Fiscal Manager for the City of Cleveland effective Monday January 19th, 2015.I began working for the City of Cleveland in January of 2002 and transferred to the Department of Public Safety as Fiscal Manager in 2006. I enjoyed both my position and the work I completed believing it was making the City of Cleveland a better place to live. Unfortunately there have been events over the past three years in the Department of Public Safety and under Mayor Jackson’s Administration that have changed this belief.

• The 2011 Cleveland Fire Department payroll scandal
•The Cleveland Police Chase in November 2012
•The shooting death of Tamir Rice

These events show a pattern of management that is lacking the required employee oversight, fails to provide the proper employee training, and management that is not being held accountable for the actions that take place within the Department of Public Safety.

The Department of Justice report released December 2014 sited years of “insufficient accountability, inadequate training and ineffective policies” within the Cleveland Police Department. These management and leadership issues ended with a child paying the ultimate price. The Department of Public Safety and the City of Cleveland is no longer an employer for which I am proud to work. It does not provide the leadership that the residents of Cleveland deserve. My last day in the office will be Wednesday January 7th, 2015.

Sincerely,
Shawn Gidley
