President-Elect Donald Trump Gets to Work Betraying His Backers
Millions of voters who thought theyd elected a populist hero will soon find out that men who live in golden penthouses are rarely heroes.
by: JOY-ANN REID
Working-class voters who thought theyd elected a populist hero will soon find out that men who live in golden penthouses are rarely populists, and even more rarely heroic. Trump, who in his own history as a developer preferred mob concrete and Chinese steel to the variety produced in the Rust Belt, cannot bring back the steel and manufacturing jobs lost in Lorain, Ohio or western Pennsylvania. No president can force shuttered mills to reopen, or companies whove left in search of cheaper labor to relocate to the United States (or those who have come back to choose expensive humans over cheaper robots.) Even if he manages to slap massive tariffs on Chinese-made goods, the only outcome will be much higher prices at Wal-Mart.
Meanwhile, anyone still wondering why Paul Ryan quietly slipped on his MAGA cap during the election will soon understand. On the off chance Trump pulled off an improbable win, Ryan knew he would be on track to enact his lifes dream: turning Medicare into a voucher program and forcing future of the most popular government program since Social Security into private insurance HMOs. According to Josh Marshall, who cites Ryans own website, the phasing out of Medicare begins in March.
Trumps tax plan will sock it to single mothers, by ending the ability to file as head of household and thus raising taxes on unmarried filers. The tax hikes will be higher the more children you have. Anyone who doesnt itemize deductions will likely get a onetime check for a few hundred dollars, the way George W. Bush did his middle class tax cut. Count that as bill money.
.........................
But not to worry, Republicans have a fix, to ensure there is no voter backlash against them.

Trump Voters & Non Voters-Voted to take The Safety Net away from their children & grandchildren
Donald Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have made clear they are serious about repealing Obamacare, and doing so quickly. But dont assume their dismantling of government health insurance programs will stop there. For about two decades now, Republicans have been talking about radically changing the governments two largest health insurance programs, Medicaid and Medicare.
The goal with Medicaid is to turn the program almost entirely over to the states, but with less money to run it. The goal with Medicare is to convert it from a government-run insurance program into a voucher system ― while, once again, reducing the money that goes into the program.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has championed these ideas for years. Trump has not. In fact, in a 2015 interview his campaign website highlighted, he vowed that Im not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid. But the health care agenda on Trumps transition website, which went live Thursday, vows to modernize Medicare and allow more flexibility for Medicaid.

In Washington, those are euphemisms for precisely the kind of Medicare and Medicaid plans Ryan has long envisioned. And while its never clear what Trump really thinks or how hell act, it sure looks like both he and congressional Republicans are out to undo Lyndon Johnsons health care legacy, not just Barack Obamas.

The Administration recognizes that the problems with the U.S. health care system did not begin with and will not end with the repeal of the ACA. With the assistance of Congress and working with the States, as appropriate, the Administration will act to:
Protect individual conscience in healthcare
Protect innocent human life from conception to natural death, including the most defenseless and those Americans with disabilities
Advance research and development in healthcare
Reform the Food and Drug Administration, to put greater focus on the need of patients for new and innovative medical products
Modernize Medicare, so that it will be ready for the challenges with the coming retirement of the Baby Boom generation and beyond
Maximize flexibility for States in administering Medicaid, to enable States to experiment with innovative methods to deliver healthcare to our low-income citizens

People voted for a racist who promised racist outcomes. They dont deserve your empathy.
By Jamelle Bouie
...........
Millions of Americans are justifiably afraid of what theyll face under a Trump administration. If any group demands our support and sympathy, its these people, not the Americans who backed Trump and his threat of state-sanctioned violence against Hispanic immigrants and Muslim Americans. All the solicitude, outrage, and moral telepathy being deployed in defense of Trump supporterswho voted for a racist who promised racist outcomesis perverse, bordering on abhorrent.
...............
Hate and racism have always been the province of good people. To treat Trump voters as presumptively innocenteven as they hand power to a demagogic movement of ignorance and racismis to clear them of moral responsibility for whatever happens next, even if its violence against communities of color. Even if, despite the patina of law, it is essentially criminal. It is to absolve Trumps supporters of any blame or any fault. Yes, they put a white nationalist in power. But the consequences? Well, its not what they wanted.

One can be, indeed one must strive to become, tough and philosophical concerning destruction and death, for this is what most of mankind has been best at since we have heard of man, wrote James Baldwin in his seminal work, The Fire Next Time. But it is not permissible that the authors of devastation should also be innocent. It is the innocence which constitutes the crime. We can hope Trump was bluffing about his promises. If not, then the next four years will be hard for the Americans he plans to target. What we cannot do is pretend this wasnt a choice, that no one was responsible.
