KRUGMAN Explains Sequestration: “This was designed to be stupid”

“This was designed to be stupid,” Krugman said. “The whole point was, this was supposed to be a doomsday device that would force the Democratic and Republican parties to reach an agreement. Of course, they didn’t, and here it goes.”

While the effect of the spending cuts would take time to manifest, Krugman told Schultz, they would definitely be felt by late 2013.

“This is exactly what the doctor did not order,” he said.

...............

“If we would just stop cutting, the growth would probably keep going,” Krugman answered. “If spending had grown as fast in this recovery as it has in past recoveries, we’d be spending something like $200 billion a year — state, local and federal — more, maybe $300 billion a year more. Maybe $300 billion a year more. We’d have about a million and a half more public sector workers than we do right now, because we’ve been laying them off at [an] unprecedented pace. So, I think $300 billion a year of additional spending would be appropriate and would mean, if we did it, that we would be pretty close to full employment at this point.”

Zing: Its the coverup, not the crime.

Its the coverup, not the crime.

His misreporting on the nature and history of the sequester is one thing. And, aside from being wrong, its almost too much inside baseball even for people like me.

But in taking it a step further and then charging the White House (as if Gene Sperling is the man in charge of the place) with threatening him, he has tried to cover over his mistake with this act of misdirection. One that even his more sympathetic colleagues have a hard time taking seriously and it seems he’s lost the fight on his original point.

Love the irony.

Arch and snarky. But I think he’s basically right.

George Takei: POTUS Got It Right Coining "Jedi Mind Meld" Phrase

...actor, director and activist George Takei, who played Lt. Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek: The Original Series, insists the president actually got it exactly right.

“Jedis are the guardians of peace and justice. And mind meld is the Vulcan way of having the force of pure, clean communication between one mind and the another,” Takei said on “The Ed Show” on Friday. “Well, that’s what the president is trying to do–bring those two forces together.”

And, the White House finds a way to 'meld' these two memes:

We shouldn’t expect answers to tough problems when politicians in DC have no skin in the game.

Congress, White House get full pay during sequester
3/1/2013 1:33pm by Chris in Paris 26 Comments

Even if the sequester shuts down much of the federal government, including your Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid payments, and unemployment benefits, for starters, unlike other federal employees the salaries of members of Congress and the President will not be in jeopardy. Their salaries won’t be cut.

Isn’t that convenient? Not only does the DC political class get the best government-subsidized health insurance, and perks that haven’t existed in decades for working Americans, they also have nothing to worry about when it comes to the sequester.

This is yet another example of why DC politics is broken.

Senior politicians in Washington have nothing to lose by being extremists.
Sure they might have to listen to a few complaints from the 99% about longer lines at the airport, or maybe additional people being out of work, but for them life is good. They live in a city where property values didn’t drop that much during the past decade, and have actually been increasing since January of 2009. Life as a senior politician in Washington, DC is pretty good, in addition to creating a false of sense of prosperity.

Woodward In A Nutshell

The real rap on Woodward isn’t that he makes things up. It’s that he takes what powerful people tell him at face value; that his accounts are shaped by who coöperates with him and who doesn’t; and that they lack context, critical awareness, and, ultimately, historic meaning.

AZ Gov. Jan Brewer: Why Is Obama Is Picking On Me?---Sequestration In Place To "Punish AZ"

“Well, you know, I personally believe it could be payback,” Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said. “It could be to punish Arizona, to make them squirm. They’re pushing back on what we’re pushing on because we want our border secure and we’re strong about it.”

Asked whether Washington was “picking on you,” she replied: “I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re doing everything in their power.”

omigod! "they" actually WENT there!
byedrie

kron4 news (san francisco) tonite announced when president obama signed the sequester into existence... then they actually discussed what was going on - and ... to my shock and amazement, after some decent explanation, the anchor stated that neither the president or congress was going to change this until the people started to react.

THEN... (are you ready) the anchor stated this was an attempt by the republicans to get rid of all the programs of the new deal that they had hated - the safety net, social services, etc.!

Va. governor restores Scooter Libby's vote rights

Va. governor restores Scooter Libby's vote rights
Published: February 28, 2013 Updated 23 hours ago

The Associated Press

RICHMOND, VA. — Former vice presidential adviser I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is among more than 1,000 felons whose voting rights were restored in the past year by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, according to a report to the General Assembly.

Libby's name is listed in the Feb. 23 report on pardons, commutations, reprieves and other forms of clemency the Republican governor is required to submit annually. Without elaboration, the report says Libby's civil rights were restored Nov. 1, 2012.

The contents of the report were first reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Libby was the chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney. He was convicted in 2007 of perjury, obstruction of justice and making false statements in a case involving leaked information that compromised the covert identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Libby's 2 1/2-year prison sentence was commuted by then-President George W. Bush.

The Next Generation Cane is designed to help elderly people find their way, as well as monitor things such as heart rate and temperature.

Its location can also be followed online - and can be set up to send email alerts if it thinks the user may have fallen over.

Technology for the elderly is a key concern for Japan's ageing population.

The prototype device, shown off at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, is equipped with various connection technologies such as GPS, 3G and wifi - and has an LED display on top of the handle.

Woodward Officially Flips Out: Agrees With Hannity: Journalists Should Ask Obama About Bill Ayers

HANNITY: The fact that the president was never asked a lot about the 6 trillion in debt that he accumulated prior to this election, in this first election wasn’t asked about his association with Bill Ayers was troublesome to me, I think we’ve got a media that’s not as critical as perhaps it once was in, for example, the days of Watergate.

WOODWARD: Well, I agree with that. We need to be very aggressive and it’s one of the judges that said democracies die in darkness and I really think that’s true.
