Obama: Mitt Romney 'backward' on women

President Barack Obama told a group of women on Friday that he has been their fiercest advocate and warned that Mitt Romney’s positions on women’s issues represent a step back in time.

“The choice between going backward or moving forward has never been so clear,” Obama told several hundred women at the National Issues Conference, a big-ticket annual fundraiser that’s been hosted by the Democratic National Committee for nearly two decades.

“And as long as I’m president, we are going to keep moving forward. You can count on that. You don’t have to take my word on it – you’ve got my signature on it,” he said, referring to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, before adding a jab at the Romney campaign, which expressed uncertainty recently about whether the candidate supported the law. “Because something like standing up for the principle of equal pay for equal work isn’t something I’ve got to ‘get back to you on’ – it’s the first law I signed.”

Yvette Clarke, New York Rep., Notifies Police After Video Of Her Surfaces On Breitbart, Beck Sites

Yvette Clarke, New York Rep., Notifies Police After Video Of Her Surfaces On Breitbart, Beck Sites
Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) notified the Capitol Police Thursday after receiving threatening phone calls, after a video of her appearing to criticize the Tea Party was posted on several conservative websites, according to a release from her office.

The video was first posted to Breitbart TV, created by the late conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart, and then picked up by Glenn Beck's website, The Blaze.

The video shows Clarke speaking at a candidate forum organized by Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform.

"When I say dealing with the Tea Party, they came up in the hundreds of thousands. So we couldn’t walk outside of our office without tripping over Tea Party members. And these are individuals that had no problems with racial epithets, they had no problem with cursing, spitting and everything else, they came to intimidate members out of passing the Affordable Care Act," says Clarke in the video.

EXCLUSIVE: Gay Marine says I do on base; a first

EXCLUSIVE: Gay Marine says I do on base; a first

EXCLUSIVE

Balloons, signs, tears, and joy may not be unusual sights on military bases when family and friends await their returning veteran’s safe return home from a long deployment, but a wedding proposal by a boyfriend to his Marine boyfriend is. That’s what happened Tuesday at Camp Pendleton, when San Diego resident, Cory Huston, himself a Navy veteran once assigned to the Marines as a hospital corpsman asked Marine Avarice Guerrero to marry him. It is believed to be the first proposal of marriage and engagement between two gay men – not to mention two war vets – on a US military base. In an exclusive, San Diego LGBT Weekly was there to photograph the historic proposal.

April 24, under a bright Southern California sky at Camp Pendleton’s Camp Del Mar near Oceanside, Calif., a full two hours before his boyfriend’s return from the badlands of Afghanistan, Cory Huston waited nervously. Huston, who was discharged under the former Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, chain smoked as he rehearsed the simple proposal he would deliver when Guerrero would arrive.

He told LGBT Weekly that by popping the question, and assuming Guerrero would say yes, he would not only be changing his and his beau’s lives forever, but also the landscape of marriage among gay servicemembers.

“This is a huge step for me,” Huston said while pacing and scanning the crowd of fellow friends and family members of returning Marines.

.........................

Actress and former lover of Prince Andrew Koo Stark will be the first to launch a phone-hacking claim against News Corporation in the US courts, it was claimed today.

The Met has informed the 55-year-old she may have been another victim of the News of the World and Ms Stark has instructed expert lawyer Mark Lewis, who won £3 million for Milly Dowler's family from the Murdoch empire.

Her advisers believe her voicemails were targeted while she was in America, taking the scandal across the Atlantic for the first time.

This could potentially be hugely damaging to Rupert Murdoch's reputation in the States.

PELOSI: Republicans "prefer tax subsidies for big oil rather than the health of America's women"

For House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the emphasis was the GOP's cuts in the preventive health program, whose initiatives she said include breast cancer screening and children's immunizations. She contrasted that with a Democratic bill extending the low student rates by cutting subsidies to oil and natural gas companies, which is opposed by the GOP.

Pelosi characterized the Republican view as, "'We prefer tax subsidies for big oil rather than the health of America's women.'"

A dispatch from an American in Korea: !!!$4.00 for my prescription medicines!!!

As comparison, a dispatch from an American in Korea:

This is the medicine I’m currently taking, not including cough syrup. I went to the ear nose and throat doctor yesterday and he prescribed all this to be taken three times a day for three days. Like a typical American I saw the list and balked thinking about how expensive all this medication would be (even if it is for just a three day supply), but when I went to the pharmacist to have the prescription filled, the total came out to 4,400 won. That’s about 4usd for those of you who don’t know the conversion.

I know that some of my readers live in countries where this is the norm, but as an American I found it awesome. This is my third time getting prescription medicine from a pharmacy and every time the low cost surprises me.

In other news, I walked into the doctors office, which I had never been to before, with no appointment and was seen in under an hour. Hoon apologized, explaining that Seoul has lots of people, and right now allergies and common cold is going around. I wanted to laugh as I thought if I were in America now…

And my visit with the doctor (a specialist by the way)? 3,800 won (well under 4usd).

Bill Moyers: The Ghost of Joe McCarthy in Today's Republican Party

Bill Moyers: The Ghost of Joe McCarthy in Today's Republican Party
Tea Party favorite Allen West was asked at a local gathering how many of his fellow members of Congress are “card-carrying Marxists or International Socialists.”

We’ve talked at times about George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, and the amnesia that sets in when we flush events down the memory hole, leaving us at the mercy of only what we know today. Sometimes, though, the past comes back to haunt, like a ghost. It happened recently when we saw Congressman Allen West of Florida on the news.

....................

By now, little of what Allen West says ever surprises. He has called President Obama “a low level Socialist agitator,” said anyone with an Obama bumper sticker on their car is “a threat to the gene pool” and told liberals like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to “get the hell out of the United States of America.” Apparently, he gets his talking points from Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, or the discredited right wing rocker Ted Nugent.

But this time, we shook our heads in disbelief: “78 to 81 Democrats… members of the Communist Party?” That’s the moment the memory hole opened up and a ghost slithered into the room. The specter stood there, watching the screen, a snickering smile on its stubbled face. Sure enough, it was the ghost of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin farm boy who grew up to become one of the most contemptible thugs in American politics.
