"Try to imagine an income guarantee of that size, in essence guaranteeing you your share of the country's total productivity; basically the same share we used to have but lost when productivity decoupled from wages decades ago."
Guess What Happened When Liberia Tested a Pilot Program of Cash Transfers to the Extreme Poor in Bomi
Surprise. People make good decisions for themselves, their children and others.
Further evidence of the potential of basic income
So what was observed in Bomi? Did the poor spend all their money on alcohol? Did they gamble it away? Did businesses fail? Did school attendance decrease? Did overall health decline? Did cats begin living with dogs?
WOW!!!

Harry Reid on becoming a Lobbyist: “I’d rather go to Singapore and have them beat me with whips.”
Id rather go to Singapore and have them beat me with whips.
Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), quoted by the New York Times, when asked if he would become a lobbyist after retiring from the U.S. Senate
...........
Jeb Bush, the Florida Republican expected to run for president, would be the easiest opponent for Hillary Rodham Clinton to beat in 2016, Mr. Reid said.
Hed have to wake up every morning and find out what hes for, Mr. Reid said. Not to mention the record of President George W. Bush. How can his brother Jeb get away from that? Mr. Reid said. Ill take Clinton baggage over that any day.
.....
Ive had calls from lots of people, Mr. Reid said. For example, Al Gore called me. Maybe I want to do something with Al Gore? I have no idea.
But on one matter he was clear: He said he would not be a lobbyist.
Id rather go to Singapore and have them beat me with whips, he said.

?1427849087Hey gays, be thankful you're not being executed en masse -- little Tommy Cotton
Appearing yesterday on CNN, Senator Tom Cotton (R) urged critics of Indianas religious freedom law to get perspective, suggesting the treatment of LGBT people in Indiana compared favorably to countries where gay people are executed.
I think its important we have a sense of perspective, Cotton said. In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay.

GA Teacher to Class: Obama is no Christian & If you voted for Obama, you’re not a Christian either
WED APR 01, 2015 AT 10:50 PM PDT
The 4/1/2015 front page story of the Dublin, GA Courier-Herald newspaper is about the following open letter, which speaks for itself. It is, unfortunately, not an April Fool's joke. A front page image is currently at http://www.courier-herald.com .
The text was reproduced in an entry on the Laurens County GA Democratc Party's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/... The permalink for the entry is https://www.facebook.com/...
(By the way, this is the same county in which David Hooks - successful white businessman - was shot multiple times and killed last September during a fruitless no-knock drug raid on his home, based on a "tip" by the meth-head who had been caught after burglarizing him. At least the state Attorney General, in February, assigned a non-local prosecutor in that case. Local law enforcement has refused to comment or answer questions, and all are still on the job, as far as I know.)
The letter explaining what happened is below the fold.
http://www.courier-herald.com/
On Tuesday, March 24, 2014, the Courier Herald published a front page article about a parents presentation at the Dublin School Board meeting that took place on March 23, 2015. At that meeting the father read a letter he had written to Dr. Ledbetter, Superintendent of Dublin City Schools.
The letter clearly expressed the parents concern about an incident that occurred in his 13-year-old sons elective class and his ensuing efforts to bring resolution to the matter. The fathers cause for worry was not so much what was said about the President of the United States but that it was said by the teacher in his childs classroom and that she called into question the Christianity of anyone who does not think as she does.
In an effort to ensure that the public has the facts, we present the following chronological order of events thus far.
1. The teacher made several negative comments about the President, including that he is not a Christian as he claims to be. She said that any parent who supports him is not a Christian. She challenged her students to prove their Christianity.
2. The child shared with his parents what she said.
3. The parents, in an effort to settle the problem, requested an immediate parent-teacher conference. However, the conference took place several days later than the parents had wished.
4. Present at the conference were the parents, the teacher, a representative from the school and the teachers husband, who is a member of the Dublin School Board.
5. The parents were expecting that the teacher would hear their concerns, acknowledge the inappropriateness of her behavior in the classroom setting and show remorse for her conduct.
6. She did none of the above. Instead, she presented to the parents a packet of several pages from a website that expressed her views on religion and politics. She was supported in this by her husband.
7. The parents concern was exacerbated by the teachers unwillingness to even consider the possibility that her classroom conduct was not conducive to a healthy learning environment. They left the conference more determined than ever to pursue the matter further.
8. The father next wrote a letter to Dr. Ledbetter expressing his concerns and read the letter at the Board meeting on March 23, 2015. The parents were then assured by Dr. Ledbetter and the School Board Chairman, Mr. Sheffield, that they would have a response within 10 business days. Several Board members expressed their appreciation that the parent persevered to bring the matter to their attention.
Some quotes from the fathers letter best describe his thoughts:
Our concerns about our son seem to be ignored. Shouldn't teachers be careful about the manner and timeliness in which they express their beliefs? "The teacher claims to be a Christian. This is an admirable stance. Unfortunately, she also freely expresses her mind about who she thinks is or is not.
The parents feel that their child was verbally sucker punched by his teacher and was not given the opportunity to defend himself.
They take their parental responsibilities very seriously and do not give up those responsibilities to anyone at any time. They believe that certain subjects, including religion, politics and sex, are best taught in the home by the parents.
This teacher has betrayed her profession. She has broken the trust from teacher to student and from teacher to parent. The harm that she has done goes beyond her classroom. It is incalculable. At the very least she has tainted the learning experience and caused divisiveness among her students, the school faculty, staff and the community.
Her husband should be held accountable for his abuse of power stemming from his participation in the parent-teacher conference.
He had no right to be there. His presence did nothing to enhance the process. In fact, his presence further eroded his wifes credibility as a teacher.
The NAACP calls upon the Dublin School Board to do the right thing; to hold the teacher to the highest standards of professionalism. We call for the Dublin School Board to take all necessary actions to ensure that, as the father stated in his letter, the matter is addressed in a way that discourages any similar incident in the future.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said The time is always right to do what is right.
The bottom line is to do what is right for all of our children. Let us not enable such harmful acts to continue by ignoring them. We cannot allow such behavior to occur with impunity. We are all accountable.
Sincerely,
Patricia Manson

Mic's Dennis Clifton reported that when Iowa sister news sites thegazette.com and KCRG.com published stories about two groups of men one black and one white arrested for burglary last week, it didn't take long for readers to start asking why the white suspects were pictured in suits and ties, while photos accompanying the story about the black suspects were mug shots.
KCRG said in a statement that the organization's policy was to use the best images available, and the white suspects' mug shots simply weren't available when the story was published, so their wrestling team photos were used instead. But Clifton noted that the story wasn't updated with mug shots (of the three who were formally booked) until after the social media backlash and a week after the mug shots were made available.

Guardian Media Group DIVESTING From Fossil Fuels- Reallocating Funds To More Sustainable Investments
?1427898976The corporate world is increasingly waking up to its responsibilities when it comes to investments in fossil fuels or other industries threatening the environment.
Guardian Media Group is no exception. The board, which I chair, recently signed up to the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment initiative. This week, it has taken a bold decision to go further: to step up engagement with fund managers on critical topics, including climate change; to increase our exposure to environmental, social and governance (ESG) managers; and, in the medium term, to divest from fossil fuels. These initiatives will ensure that the company behind the Guardian, the Observer and theguardian.com will adopt investment policies that formally recognise the importance of ESG factors in improving overall sustainability.
All of these issues will no doubt surface at the UN climate change summit in Paris in December. But we cannot wait for exhortations from an inter-governmental meeting before making the right choices concerning our £800m investment portfolio.
We are not doing this because it makes good headlines. We are doing it because it makes good business sense
Editorially, the Guardian has led the way in highlighting the threat posed by global warming. Our award-winning journalism, reaching an international audience of millions, has helped set the agenda on the dangers of unrestrained fossil fuel extraction.
Following an independent review, the board of Guardian Media Group has now begun reallocating our £800m of funds to more sustainable investments. As the worlds biggest single fund to divest from fossil fuels we will encourage other businesses to follow suit.

Disciples Of Christ Church Says NO To Indiana
Indiana will lose Disciples of Christ convention over religious freedom law
Last week, leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which is based in Indianapolis, wrote Gov. Mike Pence (R) urging him to veto the proposal. The Disciples of Christ once supported a 22-year-old federal Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, though the specifics of Indianas law have become divisive.
Indianas new law would prohibit the government from substantially burdening a persons exercise of religion, unless it can demonstrate that the burden has a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering the compelling governmental interest. Supporters say Indianas measure supports religious liberty while opponents fear it could open up grounds for people to decline services for same-sex weddings.
Church leaders say have agreed to move their 6,000-person General Assembly because of concerns that some members might experience legally sanctioned bias and rejection once so common on the basis of race. The move reflects a larger push in the state and across the nation to use business to pressure state leaders on the issue.
.............
As a Christian church, we are particularly sensitive to the values of the One we follow one who sat at (the) table with people from all walks of life, and loved them all, the letter states. Our church is diverse in point of view, but we share a value for an open Lords Table.
