Obama: Dems have ‘great chance’ of regaining House majority in 2014
By Meghashyam Mali - 05/30/13 06:53 AM ET

President Obama at a fundraiser in Chicago on Wednesday told Democratic donors the party had a “great chance” of retaking the House in 2014.

Speaking at an event for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in his hometown, Obama blamed congressional Republicans for holding up his second-term agenda and urged supporters to redouble their efforts to win back the House.

“One of the best ways to work around it is to have a Democratic House of Representatives,” Obama said.

“We’ve got a great chance of taking back the House. And I’m going to be working tirelessly wherever I get the opportunity to make the case to the American people that our ideas are the right ones,” he added.

Phyllis Schlafly says forget about everybody but white people

In an interview this week with conservative radio program Focus Today, Schlafly just came right out and said it. Calling the GOP's need to reach out to Latinos a "great myth," Schlafly said that "the people the Republicans should reach out to are the white votes, the white voters who didn't vote in the last election." Schlafly accused the Republican "establishment" of nominating "a series of losers ... who don't connect with the grassroots."

Today’s Republican Party wishes that our Supreme Court were as forward-looking as El Salvador’s.

El Salvador judges deny abortion to seriously ill woman
Woman with kidney failure and lupus forbidden from terminating pregnancy in which foetus has no chance of survival
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/may/30/el-salvador-deny-abortion-seriously-ill-woman

The Supreme Court of El Salvador has ruled that a women with lupus and kidney failure may not abort a fetus with anacephaly [warning: wikipedia link, but gross images]. Anacephaly means the fetus has no brain and is almost certain to die.

So a (literally) brainless fetus has more rights than a sick woman, in El Salvador, today. I’m sure I demonstrate my unsuitability for shield law protection by noting that the core of today’s Republican Party wishes that our Supreme Court were as forward-looking as El Salvador’s.

Toronto mayor Rob Ford was playing a little football yesterday to promote the Grey Cup (which is taking place in Toronto and conveniently features the 9-9 Argonauts, for any of you conspiracy theorists out there). He was pretty into it, too – maybe even a little too into it, as the GIF below shows.

Ironically, him falling down is not even close to being the embarrassing thing about this GIF – that title clearly belongs to the guy who frantically rushes to Ford as if he had gotten shot or something.

Fox contributor: Liberals who reject that men should dominate women are anti-science

“I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science,” Erickson explained. “But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology, when you look at the natural world, the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complimentary role.”

“We as people in a smart society have lost the ability to have complimentary relationships in nuclear families, and it is tearing us apart,” he continued, adding that “reality showed” it was harmful for women to be the primary source of income in a family.

Letter from al-Qaida's Leaders To their most difficult employee: YOU SUCK!

You’ve Gotta Read This

AP: “After years of trying to discipline him, the leaders of al-Qaida’s North African branch sent one final letter to their most difficult employee. In page after scathing page, they described how he didn’t answer his phone when they called, failed to turn in his expense reports, ignored meetings and refused time and again to carry out orders. Most of all, they claimed he had failed to carry out a single spectacular operation, despite the resources at his disposal.”

Rukmini Callimachi, AP’s West Africa bureau chief, reported this article in Dakar, Senegal and Timbuktu, Mali. Lee Keath, AP’s Mideast enterprise editor in Cairo, translated the Arabic letter into English. The letter can be found in Arabic and English at:

NYT on The Wisdom of Bob Dole: GOP "not only abandoning its past, but damaging the country’s future"

EDITORIAL
The Wisdom of Bob Dole
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
Published: May 28, 2013

Bob Dole no longer recognizes the Republican Party that he helped lead for years. Speaking over the weekend on “Fox News Sunday,” he said his party should hang a “closed for repairs” sign on its doors until it comes up with a few positive ideas, because neither he nor Ronald Reagan would now feel comfortable in its membership.

“It seems to be almost unreal that we can’t get together on a budget or legislation,” said Mr. Dole, the former Senate majority leader and presidential candidate. “I mean, we weren’t perfect by a long shot, but at least we got our work done.”

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

At long last, this is finally drawing the rancor of Mr. Dole’s heirs in the responsible wing of the party. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee said that negotiating on a budget was an “issue of integrity.” Roy Blunt, Lamar Alexander and many others have encouraged talks, and Mr. McCain (who was not above veering to the far right when he was running for president in 2008) now says the Tea Partiers are “absolutely out of line” and setting a bad precedent.

“We’re here to vote, not here to block things,” he said last week. “We’re here to articulate our positions on the issues and do what we can for the good of the country and the let the process move forward.”

Already, the mulish behavior of Congressional Republicans has led to the creation of the sequester, blocked action on economic growth and climate change, prevented reasonable checks on gun purchases and threatens to blow up a hard-fought compromise on immigration. Mr. Dole’s words should remind his party that it is not only abandoning its past, but damaging the country’s future.
