Girl Carries Injured Twin Sister Across Finish Line at Track Meet

Here's a really cool story to share, as Martha MacCallum told us about a young runner in Illinois who carried her injured sister across the finish line at a track meet. According to Fox affiliate KTVI, the 13-year-old twins were both competing in an 800-meter race at the Southern Illinois State track meet over the weekend.
All of a sudden Chloe Gruenke felt something pop in her thigh and fell to the ground. That's when her sister, Claire, came to help. She put her sister on her back and ran the remaining 370 meters.
"It's about showing compassion, love and sportsmanship. Even if you lose and help somebody it's still worth it. The energy from the crowd made me stronger," said Claire.
Though they finished last, the Gruenke sisters clearly won over the crowd.

I grow impatient with the argument that all -- or even most, or even a great deal -- of what Edward Snowden released from his time at the NSA is no big deal because we all knew it before, or because we all should have known it anyway. This is not entirely because I am tempted to use the facile argument that, if it's no big deal, and if we all knew it anyway, then why can't they just immunize Snowden and let him come home? Maybe I'm naive, or stupid, but it's also because the intelligence community -- and the all-too-human, but curiously error-prone heroes therein -- have spent most of my 60 years on this planet proving to be utterly unworthy of my trust, and utterly unworthy of the trust of a democratic society. They lie. They violate their mandates, over and over again. They have developed within themselves a complete disregard for constitutional safeguards because of a messianic sense of mission that insulates them from the rule of law. All of these dangerous elements, of course, were intensified in the wake of the atrocities committed on September 11, 2001.
They plot and they scheme and they bungle, after which somebody else's kid pays the price, and they anoint themselves with oil in the aftermath, and then they go on to the next big idea. They do not believe they are subject to the same rules as anyone else in the government, let alone the rest of their fellow citizens. They've managed to enlist most of the people in Congress who are supposed to be conducting oversight of their activities in giving them the benefits of hundreds of doubts of which they have proven themselves completely unworthy. The only weapon an informed citizenry has is information. Given the choice between knowing something and not knowing something, I choose to know it, whoever the messenger is, because the people who have that information forfeited my trust somewhere between the Bay of Pigs and the white paper on Iraqi weapons. That does not make me free, but it gives me the wherewithal to be free.
(And it's not like I'm making a new argument. John Kennedy wanted to shatter the CIA "into a million pieces" after they gamed him on the invasion of Cuba in 1962. The Moynihan Commission on government secrecy was in 1997, and the Church committee more than 20 years before that. There is no compelling reason to trust the targets of those various enterprises that they have made any substantial changes in the way they do business.)
Governments need their secrets. This is undeniable. But for too long, there has been a presumption in the Congress and in the country that anything the government decides to keep secret is something it needs to keep secret. If we're going to be ruled by secrets, we should have a public debate on that. That's a pendulum that has to swing back, sooner or later. Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald -- and Bart Gellman, and the New York Times, and the Guardian -- gave it a shove. That's all I'm saying.

John Amato dissects the Karl Rove "Hillary has brain damage" ratfuck strategy in this post, laying out in detail how this is designed to create questions about her age. That's right. The man who backed Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and John McCain (in 2008) is saying that Hillary Clinton is too old to be president.
But I think people aren't giving Rove the credit he deserves. After all, he's been around someone who is obviously impaired for many years. Of course that person served as president for 8 years:

In other words, Rove didn’t say Hillary Clinton has brain damage. He hinted it, thus giving himself deniability while ensuring that the slur lingers in the public mind. Which is what he’s been doing his entire career.

The accelerating rate of climate change poses a severe risk to national security and acts as a catalyst for global political conflict, a report published Tuesday by a leading government-funded military research organization concluded.
The Center for Naval Analyses Military Advisory Board found that climate change-induced drought in the Middle East and Africa is leading to conflicts over food and water and escalating longstanding regional and ethnic tensions into violent clashes. The report also found that rising sea levels are putting people and food supplies in vulnerable coastal regions like eastern India, Bangladesh and the Mekong Delta in Vietnam at risk and could lead to a new wave of refugees.
In addition, the report predicted that an increase in catastrophic weather events around the world will create more demand for American troops, even as flooding and extreme weather events at home could damage naval ports and military bases.

Pentagon officials said the report would affect military policy. “The department certainly agrees that climate change is having an impact on national security, whether by increasing global instability, by opening the Arctic or by increasing sea level and storm surge near our coastal installations,” John Conger, the Pentagon’s deputy under secretary of defense for installations and environment, said in a statement. “We are actively integrating climate considerations across the full spectrum of our activities to ensure a ready and resilient force.”

Not even Karl Rove seems convinced about the wisdom of Rove's suggestion that possible 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton suffered brain damage in late 2012. No matter: After following up on Los Angeles Clipper owner Donald Sterling's CNN train wreck, Daily Show host Jon Stewart turned the "unforced error spotlight" on Rove and his increasingly conspiratorial questions about Clinton's mental state. More than half of the area of 40 large cities (population over 50,000) is less than 10 feet above the high tide line, from Virginia Beach and Miami (the largest affected), down to Hoboken, N.J. (smallest). Twenty-seven of the cities are in Florida, where one-third of all current housing sits below the critical line — including 85 percent in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Each of these counties is more threatened than any whole state outside of Florida – and each sits on bedrock filled with holes, rendering defense by seawalls or levees almost impossible.
By the metric of most people living on land less than 10 ft above the high tide line, New York City is most threatened in the long run, with a low-lying population count of more than 700,000. Sixteen other cities, including New Orleans, La.; Norfolk, Va.; Stockton, Calif.; Boston, Mass.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Jacksonville, Fla.; are on the list of places with more than 100,000 people below the line. (Much of New Orleans is already below sea level, but is protected at today’s level by levees.)
Climate Central’s enhanced analysis paints a much more detailed pictured for completed states. For example, more than 32,000 miles of road and $950 billion of property currently sit on affected land in Florida. Threatened property in New York and New Jersey totals more than $300 billion. And New England states all face important risks.
The predicted sea level rise will take a long time to unfold. The numbers listed here do not represent immediate or literal threats. Under any circumstances, coastal populations and economies will reshape themselves over time. But the new research on West Antarctic Ice Sheet decay — and the amount of humanity in the restless ocean’s way — point to unrelenting centuries of defense, retreat, and reimagination of life along our coasts.

Is Pope Francis willing to go to extremes to fill the pews? Apparently so, if his latest outreach message is an indication.
Speaking during the homily at his daily morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta inside Vatican City where he lives on Monday, he told his mostly clerical audience that they should keep an open mind to anyone—or anything—seeking God. “If—for example—tomorrow an expedition of Martians came, and some of them came to us, here... Martians, right? Green, with that long nose and big ears, just like children paint them... And one says, ‘But I want to be baptized!’ What would happen?” he asked parishioners. “When the Lord shows us the way, who are we to say, ‘No, Lord, it is not prudent! No, let’s do it this way...’”
One assumes the pope doesn’t actually think an alien ship filled with little green men hoping to convert to Catholicism will land in St. Peter’s Square any time soon, and Vatican Radio quickly interpreted the message as one about “inclusion” lest anyone start worrying about the Holy Father’s faculties. Apparently the Pope’s message about Martians meant, “Who are we to close the doors to the Holy Spirit?” according to an an article attributed to Vatican Radio on the Vatican’s main news website. “The Spirit blows where it wills, but one of the most common temptations of those who have faith is to bar its path and drive it in one direction or another.”
Catholic News Service also quickly defended and interpreted the quirky remarks, saying Francis was trying to make the point that the Church is often overly judgmental when it comes to acceptance and that “if the Holy Spirit prompted the most unusual being to see, baptism, who would we be to hinder that person?”
