THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) has voted to delay adopting a policy on net neutrality for 120 days.
In a heated debate that saw several protests including one observer physically removed from the chamber, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler announced that there will be a 120 day consultation and response period - an indecisive result that came as a shock to many.
The commission will listen to arguments for and against the adoption of either Section 706 of the Open Internet Act of 2010, which promotes competition among internet service providers (ISPs), or their reclassification under Title II of the Telecommunications Act of 1934 as "telecommunications services".
Wheeler began by telling the assembly, "There is one internet. Not a fast internet. Not a slow internet, one internet," an emphatic exclamation that emphasised his publicly held belief that the end of net neutrality will not, in fact, be the result of his proposal.

Bill to curb NSA spying looks like change, but isn’t really

WASHINGTON — The bipartisan bill that aims to put serious curbs on the National Security Agency’s mass collection of Americans’ communications is being hailed by Republicans and Democrats as a big breakthrough.
It’s not.
“The bottom line: This is largely faux reform and a surveillance salve,” said Thomas Drake, a former NSA senior official turned whistle-blower who’s critical of the agency’s collection programs. “To date, neither the House nor Senate attempts go far enough.”
That’s not easy to discern, thanks to an outpouring of raves for the legislation. Democrats, Republicans and traditionally skeptical watchdog groups have put their muscle behind the USA Freedom Act.

Even before Wednesday's debate started, Idaho Public Television announced that it would broadcast the event on a 30-second delay in anticipation of rampant cussin'. Brown—who wore his customary leather vest and leather hat, has the presidential seal tattooed on his shoulder, two cigars in his right breast pocket, and is missing several prominent teeth—used his closing argument to wave a signed certificate from a "Masai prophet" that confirmed that he would one day be president of the United States. Brown revealed that he supports gay marriage because as a cab driver in Boise he discovered that gay people "love each other more than I love my motorcycle." His closing argument was blunt: "You have your choice, folks: A cowboy, a curmudgeon, a biker, or a normal guy. Take your pick… We're leaving it up to you

• Diplomat describes day as his 'most embarrassing at the UN'
Barack Obama's administration rebuked Norway after he won the 2009 Nobel peace prize, saying it was an awkward honour for an as-yet untested leader, a Norwegian diplomat revealed on Thursday.
"My most embarrassing day at the UN, at the time when I was Norway's ambassador there, was when Obama's Nobel peace prize was announced. Nobody was talking about it," said Morten Wetland, who served at the UN from 2008 to 2012.
"My colleague in Washington received a reprimand from Obama's chief of staff [Rahn Emmanuel, at the time]. The word 'fawning' was used," Wetland added in an article in Norwegian daily Dagens Naeringsliv.
The diplomat said that the prize put Obama, who was nominated for the prize just weeks after taking office, in a difficult position. "An American president wants to set his own agenda. Here he was forced into a role that he hadn't sought," Wetland said. "It could seem like somebody did this to make Obama visit the country."

Glenn Grennwald's No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State is out now. I have not yet read it. However, I've read the Amazon reviews, most of which are positive. One of the earliest, by someone calling himself Bamartr "reader24", seems to be a threat:
It's clear that Bamartr, whoever he is, has accepted Edward Jay Epstein's absurd take on the Snowden affair -- that the whole thing is a Russian covert op. I hope that Epstein's paranoia doesn't lead to violence.

Revealed: Sprint challenged NSA in 2009
Years before Edward Snowden pulled back the curtain on the National Security Agency (NSA), the spy agency shared the legal basis behind its phone data collection with Sprint.
Top-secret documents released by the Obama administration on Wednesday show that the phone company asked for details about the contested NSA program in 2009, well before it was made public through Snowden's leaks.
To avoid a formal legal challenge to the program, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which oversees the NSA, allowed the government to discuss the legal basis of the program with the company in 2010. It also extended the time period for Sprint to continue “ongoing discussions” before filing a petition, “in the parties’ mutual interests in avoiding litigation.”
After that, the firm dropped its protests.
