On today's show, right wing talk radio host Rush Limbaugh encored his hilarious misconceptions of reproductive health, claiming that taking the morning after pill caused an abortion to occur.
A caller then carefully--and using very small words--explained to Limbaugh how the pill works in the real world:
CALLER: Hi. Thanks for taking my call. I appreciate it.
RUSH: You bet.
CALLER: I'm sort of calling on a third tier subject today. I know it's sort of low on the totem pole of issues today, but way back at the beginning of the somehow you referred to the morning-after pill as an abortion pill. And just in the interests of everybody being high information, I just wanted to point out that just as a condom stops sperm from ever getting to an egg and therefore prevents pregnancy from ever occurring, the morning-after pill, what it actually does, and maybe you don't know this, it slows ovulation, and suspends the release of an egg to ever get to the sperm, and so pregnancy never takes place, it can't possibly cause an abortion, and in fact if an egg is fertilized and implanted in the uterine wall, it has no effect.
RUSH: Okay, so what happens if low-information voter, Dick, and low-information Jane get together on Friday night and they copulate and have coitus, and the sperm of low-information voter Dick connects with the egg of low-information voter Jane at like one a.m., and then at 10 a.m. low-information Jane goes and takes the pill, what happens?
CALLER: Well, so long as there has not been an egg fertilized, there can't be any pregnancy, and the morning-after pill would prevent that from ever happening.
RUSH: But in my example if Jane's egg is free, if there has been a connection of low-information voter sperm and low-information voter egg in my example, if the sperm got there and bammo you got an embryo, she takes the pill, is she still gonna get pregnant?
CALLER: It has no effect. It only is effective if the egg has not yet been fertilized, and therefore it prevents pregnancy from ever occurring and therefore it can't possibly cause an abortion, as you said.
RUSH: Well, in the spirit, what it is permitting is activity which is not productive to young people whatever in any way to occur without consequences, and it results in cultural decay and cultural rot, and that is the ultimate point of this. But you may be scientifically correct that it might not cause an abortion.

Clapper appears to have perjured himself.
(not that he cares)Sen. Ron Wyden says Director of National Intelligence James Clapper had a day to prepare his answer to Congress that there was no widespread collection of Americans' phone records.
Clapper, in answer to Wyden's questions in March testimony, denied that any intentional and massive sweep of Americans phone records as part of counterterror surveillance was occurring. It was revealed in the last week that two such programs do exist and were recently renewed.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Wyden said when NSA Director Keith Alexander didn't provide a full answer to questions about the programs, Wyden gave Clapper a day's notice that he would be asked the question at the hearing. Afterwards, he said, he gave Clapper's office another chance to amend his answer, but Clapper declined.

Famed Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew, who played the Wookie “Chewbacca” in the original Star Wars films, found himself in a bit of trouble last week in Denver when he was preparing to fly back home to Dallas. You see, the 7 foot 3 inch actor has a walking stick, that he needs to, you know, walk, and it’s large (because he’s large). And to add to the fun, the cane looks like a light saber. The TSA was having none of it.
They took Chewbacca’s light saber.

Washington, DC - Today, Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley and Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), accompanied by Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dean Heller (R-NV), Mark Begich (D-AK), Al Franken (D-MN), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Ron Wyden (D-OR), introduced a bill that would put an end to the “secret law” governing controversial government surveillance programs. This bill would require the Attorney General to declassify significant Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) opinions, allowing Americans to know how broad of a legal authority the government is claiming to spy on Americans under the PATRIOT Act and Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
“Americans deserve to know how much information about their private communications the government believes it’s allowed to take under the law,” Merkley said. “There is plenty of room to have this debate without compromising our surveillance sources or methods or tipping our hand to our enemies. We can’t have a serious debate about how much surveillance of Americans’ communications should be permitted without ending secret law.”
“This bipartisan amendment establishes a cautious and reasonable process for declassification consistent with the rule of law,” Lee said. “It will help ensure that the government makes sensitive decisions related to surveillance by applying legal standards that are known to the public. Particularly where our civil liberties are at stake, we must demand no less of our government.”

NSA surveillance: The US is behaving like China
Both governments think they are doing what is best for the state and people. But, as I know, such abuse of power can ruin lives

During my detention in China I was watched 24 hours a day. The light was always on. There were two guards on two-hour shifts standing next to me – even watching when I swallowed a pill; I had to open mouth so they could see my throat. Because what gets decided in secret gets played out in public, always. (Recall the famous Doonesebury cartoon in which the two Cambodian peasants are asked about the "secret bombing" of their country. "It wasn't secret," one of them says. "I said, 'Look, here come the bombers.'"
You people jack around with some people on the other side of the planet and, pretty soon, I'm picking pieces of a Starbucks out of my hair, if I'm lucky.

Do Democratic partisans forget that House Dems Voted 2:1 against extending the PATRIOT Act in 2011?
(i admit, i had forgotten about this)Only two members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus---Corrine Brown and Eddie Johnson--voted for the bill. The other 52 Democratic votes were from a mix of Blue Dogs (the John Barrow's and Jim Matheson's) and New Dems.
What's particularly interesting is that the Democratic vote on extending the PATRIOT Act is almost the exact inverse of the Democratic public opinion on NSA surveillance in the recent Pew poll. 122 out of 192 Democrats opposed the bill: 63.5%. 54 out of 192 supported the bill: 28.1%
Hopefully, the House Democrats will continue to vote their conscience and the Constitution, rather than taking their cues from the President as too many in the general public seem to do.
