DEA Threatens MA Medical Marijuana Doctors

Massachusetts enacted a medical marijuana law in 2012. Recently, shortly after the first licenses were approved, the DEA began visiting MA physicians associated with medical marijuana dispensaries and giving them a choice: Give up your DEA license to prescribe most medications, or give up your association with dispensaries.

The stark choice is necessary, the doctors said they were told, because of friction between federal law, which bans any use of marijuana, and state law, which voters changed in 2012 to allow medical use of the drug.

The DEA’s action has left some doctors, whose livelihoods depend on being able to offer patients pain medications and other drugs, with little option but to resign from the marijuana companies,where some held prominent positions.

The DEA gets progressively more out of step with the Department of Justice, Congress and state legislatures every day. Its budget is bloated and it desperately needs new leadership. DEA Director Michelle Leonhart, who presumably approves tactics such as these, should be asked to resign and a more enlightened director should be appointed to take her place. Zoo Worker Accidentally Shoots Tranquilizer Dart Into Employee Wearing Gorilla Suit

La Opinión de Tenerife reports that the man had donned a gorilla suit and was running around the park in a drill to prepare employees for an actual animal escape. The tranquilizer-wielding veterinarian apparently did not know the exercise was in progress and shot the zoo worker in the leg from a distance.

In defending their same-sex marriage ban, state officials claimed that "virtually all cultures through time" have recognized marriage "as the union of an opposite-sex couple."

But as U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb wrote in her 88-page ruling on Friday, that's simply not true.

"As an initial matter, defendants and amici have overstated their argument. Throughout history, the most 'traditional' form of marriage has not been between one man and one woman, but between one man and multiple women, which presumably is not a tradition that defendants and amici would like to continue," Crabb wrote in her opinion.

British WW II Vet Gone Missing From Nursing Home --Turns Up In France Wearing His Medals

A British World War II veteran who had gone missing from his nursing home in England on Thursday night turned up in France on the beaches of Normandy, wearing his medals, for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion on Friday. Bernard Jordan, 89, took a bus to France on Thursday night so he could attend the commemorations after his nursing home was unable to get him on an accredited tour with the Royal British Legion. "Hope our veteran enjoyed Normandy #DDay70. Short notice meant the Home couldn't get him a tour so he surprised everyone by making his own way," tweeted Nev Kemp, the police chief for the city of Brighton and Hove.
