Manafort's former tax accountant fired by firm after testimony

Paul Manafort’s former accountant was fired from a Virginia firm after she told the court she was aware that Manafort’s tax returns contained false information.

Cindy Laporta testified Friday in the government’s case against the former Trump campaign chairman, saying she went along with the scam because she was worried Manafort and his right-hand-man Rick Gates would sue. Laporta was given immunity from prosecution for her testimony.

Virginia-based Kositzka, Wicks & Co. said in a statement Tuesday it was “shocked by Ms. Laporta’s testimony, which clearly represents that she failed to meet the firm’s high standards for professional and ethical conduct in her work for Mr. Manafort.” In a follow-up email, the company said: “She is no longer working here.”

In Detroit, power outages have knocked out 14 polling locations and they are turning voters away

The power was out at at least 14 Wayne County polling sites this morning following a round of overnight storms, DTE reports.

Voters are casting ballots in a statewide primary election today. As of noon, five of the affected sites were still without power, but were due to be back online by 2 p.m, DTE said.

Poll workers at Zion Chapel near Detroit's North Corktown were sharing a single flashlight and relying on a small generator to keep things moving along this morning, Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat running for Michigan's 13th Congressional District said. The power was also out at Gompers Elementary in the city's Rosedale Park neighborhood, where five precincts vote, Tlaib said.

Voting can still continue throughout the outage even if the tabulator’s battery runs down, SOS spokesman Fred Woodhams says. The precincts have paper voter lists and secure voter ballots they can tally once power is restored, or hand count if need be.

Manafort secured $16 million in loans from Stephen Calk in exchange for a job in Trump Admin

Mueller asking if Manafort promised banker White House job in return for loans
by Tom Winter, Hallie Jackson and Kenzi Abou-Sabe / Feb.21.2018 / 9:19 AM ET

Federal investigators are probing whether former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort promised a Chicago banker a job in the Trump White House in return for $16 million in home loans, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told NBC News.

Manafort received three separate loans in December 2016 and January 2017 from Federal Savings Bank for homes in New York City, Virginia and the Hamptons.

The banker, Stephen Calk, president of the Federal Savings Bank, was announced as a member of candidate Trump's Council of Economic Advisers in August 2016.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team is now investigating whether there was a quid pro quo agreement between Manafort and Calk. Manafort left the Trump campaign in August 2016 after the millions he had earned working for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine drew media scrutiny. Calk did not receive a job in President Donald Trump's cabinet.

Fox Host: How is Trump Supposed to Testify to Mueller Knowing He Can't Tell a Lie?

Outnumbered host Dagen McDowell wondered how Trump could consider speaking with Mueller, implying that the president would have a tough time avoiding any false statements.

“How in the world could he ever cooperate and sit down with Mueller for an interview knowing that if you tell one lie to Bob Mueller, he will move to file charges?” she said during Monday’s show.

McDowell also suggested Mueller was laying a perjury trap for Trump, hoping he’d slip up eventually.

“From the outside looking in doesn’t it look like increasingly that the Mueller team is setting a trap for the president if he decides to speak with them them?” she asked.

Misha Better Hope He Has Some Big Big Goods on Trump

Federal prosecutors in New York are homing in on possible tax fraud as part of their criminal investigation into the financial dealings of former Trump fixer Michael Cohen, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

A person familiar with the probe told the Journal that the possible fraud violations center on whether Cohen underreported the income he earned from his taxi medallion business on federal tax returns. Those funds amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars Cohen received in cash.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office are also investigating whether employees at New York’s Sterling National Bank allowed Cohen to take out loans for that business without providing appropriate documentation, according to the report.

Cohen is under investigation for a host of financial crimes, including campaign finance violations and bank fraud. The former Trump Organization executive has signaled his willingness to cooperate with prosecutors and turn over information damaging to the president.
