Republican lawmaker tells worker wanting higher minimum wage to ‘get a job’

By David Edwards
Thursday, July 5, 2012 16:13 EDT

A worker in Florida got an earful from Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) on Wednesday when he asked the congressman to support a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour.

“Ten bucks, that would give us a living wage,” the constituent points out.

“How about getting a job?” Young snaps.

“I do have one, $8.50 an hour,” the man insists.

“Why do you want that benefit?” Young grumbles. “Get a job.”

“I do have a job, but it’s not enough to get by on,” the man explains as Young turns away.

Judge: George Zimmerman's new bond: $1 million
By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel

11:33 a.m. EST, July 5, 2012

A Sanford judge today ordered George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, released on $1 million bail.

It was not immediately clear how long it would take the 28-year-old Zimmerman to arrange his release.
Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said Friday that Zimmerman's legal defense fund had a balance of $211,000, more than enough to cover the 10-percent non-refundable portion charged by most bonding companies.

That's because Zimmerman's wife had testified under oath that the couple was nearly destitute when bank records show money was pouring in from a support-George-Zimmerman website at the rate of $1,000 a day.

On the day Shellie Zimmerman testified that the couple was broke, she and her husband had access to $130,000, a defense financial expert testified Friday.

Wikileaks releases 'Syria files'
Last updated Thu 5 Jul 2012

Wikileaks has released what it says is a collection of more than two million emails from Syrian political figures. The cache includes files from, "Syrian political figures, ministries and associated companies."

Wikileaks claim the files range from, "intimate correspondence of the most senior Baath party figures to records of financial transfers from Syrian ministries to other nations."

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is quoted on the website as saying:

"The material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria’s opponents. It helps us not merely to criticise one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts. It is only through understanding this conflict that we can hope to resolve it."

ACTA defeated in EU Parliament

The Anti Counterfeit Trade Agreement has been defeated in the EU Parliament with 478 votes to 39. The Parliament decided to reject ACTA once and for all which was seen as a threat to internet freedom. The Trade Agreement is a multinational treaty aiming at fighting the "trade of counterfeit goods".

However it triggered widespread outcry across the world with many of its opponents accusing ACTA to have been secretly negotiated, threatening fundamental rights, freedom of expression and online privacy.

In February, thousands of people demonstrated throughout Europe against the treaty.

Rick Falkvinge, founder of the Swedish Pirate Party said "This is a day of celebration. This is the day when citizens of Europe and the world won over unelected bureaucrats who were being wooed and lobbied by the richest corporations of the planet" on his blog.

Pete Seeger & Bruce Springsteen: "This Land Is Your Land"

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me.

I roamed and I rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
While all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
A voice was chanting, As the fog was lifting,
This land was made for you and me.

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
This land was made for you and me.

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?

NY Attorney General Probing U.S. Chamber of Commerce For Allegedly Laundering AIG Money For Lobbying, Political Commercials

New York state will investigate the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for unfair corporate influence in elections.
POSTED AT 6:12 PM BY MEHRAD YAZDI
Yesterday, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued a subpoena targeting a foundation affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for illegally funneling $18 million to the Chamber for its political campaigning and lobbying efforts.

The New York Times reports:

The investigation is also looking at connections between the chamber’s foundation, the National Chamber Foundation, and another philanthropy, the Starr Foundation, which made large grants to the chamber foundation in 2003 and 2004. During the same period, the National Chamber Foundation lent the chamber $18 million, most of it for what was described as a capital campaign.

Watchdog groups claim that the grants given to the National Chamber Foundation from the Starr Foundation had subsequently been loaned to the Chamber of Commerce to be used to finance lobbying in Congress and run issue advertising in the 2004 presidential and Congressional elections.

Schneiderman’s investigation is significant because it targets the use of tax-exempt groups that funnel money into politics while hiding donors:

The biggest such groups, including Americans for Prosperity, which is backed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, and Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, which was founded by Karl Rove and other Republican strategists, are expected to spend hundreds of millions of dollars this year on issue advertisements against candidates to sway the outcome of the presidential and Congressional elections.
