Excellent Slowpoke TOON: Handy Candidate Comparison Chart (Why Romney Sucks)

Handy candidate comparison chart

I find that people who spew the platitude that "the candidates are the same" tend to be the ones who have the least to lose if the wrong candidate is elected. At risk of sounding melodramatic, these elections truly are a matter of life and death. If you end the Affordable Care Act and millions of Americans lose their health insurance, people will die as a result. A recent estimate puts the number at 26,000 deaths per year due to lack of insurance; that's more than a few September 11ths. Then there's the Global Gag Rule, which Romney would reinstate. It rarely gets mentioned, but this policy wreaks havoc on women in impoverished nations. Romney would also end contributions to the U.N. Population Fund, which combats the spread of HIV and prevents 22,000 deaths annually.

These are but a few examples. Turning Medicare into a voucher program, radicalizing the Supreme Court for a generation, and displaying an open hostility toward science probably won't help things either. Obama isn't perfect, but as far as I'm concerned, voting is a moral arithmetic problem with a clear answer.

Celebratory gunfire at Saudi wedding cuts cable, 23 electrocuted

RIYADH | Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:11am EDT

(Reuters) - Celebratory gunfire at a wedding party in eastern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night brought down an electric cable, killing 23 people, a local civil defense official said.

"At the wedding, the cable fell on a metal door and the 23 people who died were all electrocuted," Eastern Province official Abdullah Khashman said by phone.

A photograph of the aftermath of the accident, published on local newspapers' websites showed a large courtyard strewn with fallen chairs and a pole in the middle supporting cables carrying lightbulbs.

Saudi Arabia banned the shooting of firearms at weddings, a popular tradition in tribal areas of the conservative Islamic kingdom, last month.

HERE Is One Way To Cut Through The Crap... "Despicable," "Liar," "They Are Absolutely insane."

Ohio State Senator Nina Turner tells it like it is. She appeared on The Ed Show Tuesday night to discuss the Mitt Romney campaign's Jeep lies and misleading women's right messages.

"He has no shame and no soul. If you are lying in the beginning you'll be lying in the end."

"They know good-and-daggone well that the President threw a lifeline out to the auto industry in this country...
And for them to try and scare the citizens of the state is despicable. And we're not gonna forget."

"We're not buying it, but he is a LIAR."

"You have a running mate that just identified rape as a method of conception.
They are absolutely insane. They have lost their ever-loving minds."

"It is despicable. Again, the whole campaign is laced with lies."

President Barack Obama Targeted By Anonymous Hate Text Messages

Posted: 10/30/2012 9:57 pm EDT Updated: 10/30/2012 10:16 pm EDT

WASHINGTON -- A sting of vitriol-laden text messages hit voters' phones Tuesday night, blasting President Barack Obama with anti-gay attacks and false claims.

In what appeared to be a coordinated campaign of cell phone text mail or text messages, one Virginia voter received one from the address sms@votegopett.com that made the inflammatory claim: "Obama supports homosexuality and its radical social agenda. Say No to Obama on Nov 6!"

New York Times reporter Jonathan Weisman tweeted that his 13-year-old daughter also got a text. "Obama denies protection to babies who survive abortions. Obama is just wrong,"; said the message from sms@gopmessage.com. HuffPost's Sam Stein also got a message, declaring"Seniors cant afford to have 4 more years of Obama budget cuts to Medicare."

Some of the messages did not seem well-targeted.

Jennifer Cryer tweeted that she got one from sms@obamaliesett.com that said: "Stop Obama from forcing gay marriage on the states. Your vote is your voice." Cryer used her voice, and answered back, saying "I'm gay, you fucking douchebags."

Monster storm leaves U.S. East Coast crippled; 30 dead

By Anna Louie Sussman and Michael Erman

NEW YORK | Tue Oct 30, 2012 2:18pm EDT

(Reuters) - Millions of people were left reeling in the aftermath of monster storm Sandy on Tuesday as New York City and a wide swathe of the eastern United States struggled with epic flooding and massive power outages. The death toll climbed to at least 30.

Sandy, which crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds in New Jersey overnight as the biggest storm to hit the country in generations, swamped parts of New York's subway system and Manhattan's Wall Street district, closing financial markets for a second day.

As the weakened but still sprawling storm system continued its trek inland, more than 1 million people in a dozen states along its path were still under orders to evacuate. Sandy left behind a trail of damage - homes underwater, trees toppled and power lines downed - up and down the Atlantic coast.
The storm interrupted the presidential campaign a week before Election Day, giving President Barack Obama an opportunity to look presidential as he oversees the government response. He drew praise from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who has been a strong supporter of Obama's opponent.

DETROIT | Tue Oct 30, 2012 7:05am EDT
(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co on Tuesday reported a better-than-expected profit for the third quarter on the strength of higher vehicle prices and lower costs in North America.

The second-largest U.S. automaker reported an operating profit of $2.2 billion, or 40 cents per share, up from $1.9 billion or 34 cents per share a year earlier.

The average Wall Street estimate called for Ford to make 30 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Third quarter net income was $1.63 billion or 41 cents a share. Revenue fell 3 percent to $32.1 billion, better than the $30.9 billion expected by analysts.

Occupy Protesters Were (Morally & Intellectually) Right, Says Bank of England Official

Occupy protesters were right, says Bank of England official

The anti-capitalist protesters who occupied St Paul’s Cathedral were both morally and intellectually right, a senior Bank of England official said last night.

By James Kirkup, Deputy Political Editor10:29PM GMT 29 Oct 20122

Andrew Haldane, a member of the Bank’s financial policy committee, said the Occupy movement was correct in its attack on the international financial system.

The Occupy movement sprang up last year and staged significant demonstrations in both the City of London and New York, protesting about the unequal distribution of wealth and the influence of the financial services industry. Members of the movement occupied the grounds of St Paul’s and remained camped there for more than three months until police evicted them in February last year.

“Occupy has been successful in its efforts to popularise the problems of the global financial system for one very simple reason; they are right,” Mr Haldane said last night. Mr Haldane, the Bank’s executive director for financial stability, was speaking to Occupy Economics, an offshoot of the Occupy movement, at an event in central London.

In a speech entitled Socially Useful Banking, he said the protesters had helped bring about a “reformation” in financial services and the way they are regulated.
