"I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half."

The "War on Terror" in a nutshell.

Cross posted in General Discussion, FYI.

"I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half."

This quote is generally attributed to an 19th century railroad tycoon named Jay
Gould, but sadly his robber-baron creed is far from dead. In fact, it is very much
alive and well, hiding behind dark SCOTUS robes decreeing that that "corporations
are people". And the results have been predictably draconian.
http://shoqvalue.com/i-can-hire-one-half-of-the-working-class-to-kill-the-other-half
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/03/ff_nsadatacenter/all/

This is precisely what is so compelling for the 1%, to push the "Terrorist" meme,
is that it provides "cover" for 1% to "lawfully" hire 1/2 the working class..." to
oppress, neutralize, eliminate whoever it wants to, in broad daylight with impunity,
because, well, because they can; and it's "profitable" from their standpoint to do
so.
After all, that's what unfettered corporate capitalism does best, destroy lives,
pollute the air, water, and soil, trample the rights of citizens, extort money from
the poor, etc. and then to crush anyone who questions their authority to do so.
See Chris Hedges, if you haven't already heard him out on this.
http://www.democracynow.org/appearances/chris_hedges

The more time that passes, since Jay Gould, since the 1985 movie by Terry Gilliam
"Brazil" prophetically predicted our sham "War on Terror", 16 years before 911 kicked
this bogus war into hyper-drive, the more this clip from Brazil speaks for itself.

IMHO this is the CORE ISSUE of our time, and it's not going to get any "better"
until this pointless, endless "War on Terror" is called by it's proper name "1%'s
War on We The People". Hell, our own generals tell us that the drone wars are
"creating more terrorists" exponentially, as family member of "collateral damage"
victims vow to get revenge. But aren't there a few "really bad guys" out there
who'd like nothing more than to blow up a shopping mall? The answer to this is
unfortunately "yes"; however, we already had a full-spectrum law enforcement
apparatus in place before 911, before the Patriot Act, before the Dept. of Homeland
Security, before the NDAA paved the way for "indefinite detention" to become the
"law" of the land, eclipsing virtually all constitutional rights of US citizens.

Any actual real terrorists that may exist (who are not double/triple agents with ties
to our own CIA) are only the tip of a huge iceberg of foreign resentment and hatred
of the USA's arrogant imperialistic covert wars of subterfuge, double-dealing and deceit,
and our maniacal militaristic habit of invading other nations when it suits the 1%'s
pocketbooks to do so.

Call me crazy, but that's how I see it. I don't for a minute believe that Obama likes
this any more than most of us on DU, but he does have a lovely family who doesn't
want to see his brains splattered in public. I can't really say I blame him for going
along with it, and I certainly don't envy being him right now, given the fast track to
Dystopia that's becoming the new normal.
<--help! I'm running out of tinfoil.

The Official Wesley Clark for Secretary of Defense string. The right person. The right time.

Near as I can tell, the RePukes must just be ASKING for Obama to
nominate Clark, since they don't like the Republican that Obama first
nominated,

I don't know of any "dirt" anyone has on Clark, that would preclude
him from serious consideration. Does anyone?

The most "contriversial" thing Clark's done, according to Wikipedia
anyway, is to speak out for Obama's presidential run in '08.

What say you DU? Clark for DoD Secretary?

NDAA Nooz: A Youn Man from Occupy Virginia Speaks Out For 1st & 5th Amendments of US Constitution

My hat is off to this young man. Well done Trey.

THIS is what it looks like to truly "serve your country well". I am a lifelong
Democrat and a long-time Obama supporter, who voted for him in both 08 & 12.
And as such, I feel similarly to Trey: i.e. that it is my patriotic DUTY to find every
conceivable way to apply pressure on the President to undo this NDAA travesty, now
happeningin a virtual black hole of studious NON-coverage by the M$M, so the general
public is pretty much completely clueless about these new laws, and their long term
implications and dangers, especially under future presidents who may not be nearly
as trustworthy and "benign" as President Obama.

We are not doing Obama any favors by allowing the NDAA train-wreck in slow
motion to roll over our rights, unimpeded by any grass-roots progressive Resistance.
This is precisely what the OCCUPY WALL ST. phenomenon was/is ALL about.

I feel it's my duty as a US citizen to also speak out about this issue, and to continue
to do what I can, to support and report on the currently unfolding trials and hearings
re: Chris Hedges et al vs. Barack Obama.

NDAA - A Youn Man from Virginia Takes a Stand Against Autocracy in New York City
OpEdNews Op Eds 2/14/2013 at 12:19:23 *** By Marianne Hoynes

A threat to our right to bear arms seems to get a lot of people from all sides of the issue very plugged in and outraged. Nothing has been done to regulate the Second Amendment to the Constitution yet, but imagine what the People would do, if the Congress and the President just did away with all gun rights for all Americans?

Congress and The President have done away with First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution, by a law passed in 2012 called NDAA or National Defense Authorization Act. There is very little outcry that We the People have lost our right to free speech, free press or the right to peacefully assemble, granted in the First Amendment. We have lost the protection of the Fifth Amendment. We can now be deprived of life, liberty and property without due process of law. We have lost our most basic Miranda rights, and rights to habeus corpus. Most Americans are not following the details in this case that affect our very freedoms, and what defines us as American. Who cares?

Well, 29 year old Trey Walter Kindred cares. Last week, Trey hopped a bus from Virginia at 3:00 am, so that he could be a witness to the appeals case for Chris Hedges et al vs. Barack Obama NDAA hearing at the Federal Court of Appeals in New York City.

Trey is a concerned citizen. "I have been following the NDAA trial for the last year. I didn't know that I could attend the trial until I saw a page through the Occupy group on Facebook, inviting people to come and show solidarity. I didn't just want to be here. I feel like it is my duty to be here as an American."

Trey arrived at the court house early in order to get inside and a good position from which to bear witness to this historical trial. "I wanted to show my support for Chris Hedges in any way, shape or form. NDAA is a travesty for Civil Rights. Obama is betraying the People."

Similar to many people in Trey's age demographic, he and his friends voted for Barack Obama in 2008.

Trey said, "Obama ran on things like, denouncing George Bush for signing the Patriot Act, and holding prisoners in indefinite detention in Guantanamo Bay. But then Obama signed the Patriot Act himself
. He didn't free anyone from Guantanamo. He didnt stop the torturing. What he did in fact do, was take the Patriot Act, pump it full of steroids and sign it into the bill called NDAA. He didnt write it, but he signed it. It isn't just Obama. He is part of a large, evil system; but because he takes part in that system, that makes him just as evil."

The attorney Carl Mayer, suing Obama on the grounds that this bill is unconstitutional, argues that the language in a bill is what defines the law. Section 1021 provides sweeping powers of detention through incredibly vague and undefined terms.

If a U.S. Citizen is arrested, he or she must be given his or her Miranda rights. NDAA speaks of "capturing" citizens, an undefined term, and overturns hundreds of years of domestic law. It permits the U.S. military to seize U.S. citizens, to hold them in military facilities including offshore penal colonies, until the end of hostilities, whenever that is, with no right to due process of any kind. Never has the U.S. military had the authority to arrest a U.S. citizen while civil law still exists, until NDAA.

Trey said, "I learned that I could go to the hearing through the Occupy Movement. I'm not on the street screaming about injustices, but I consider myself to be part of Occupy. All Americans are. This is the only way things are going to change for US.

I thought our country was going through tough financial times. How is it even financially responsible to enforce NDAA all over the world, as the U.S. seems to become self imposed international law by these kinds of actions? The NDAA is a travesty to all humanity on the planet. Now we really are the World Police."

Conservatives, Liberals and Progressives alike should stand in outrage against the autocracy established in this bill. What happens in the outcome of this appeals case matters not only in current politics and law, but matters as a stepping stone to future infringement of our liberties in the U.S.. There is a huge force of anti privacy laws being passed now. Will we be Americans like Trey Walter Kindred, and stand up for our individual freedoms and fight for our Constitution? Or will we sit silently, out of fear or lack of attention to these issues, and allow our silence to be the consent of our undoing?

Open Letter to all you ultra-liberal wimps whining about Dorner being torched.

Who do you think you are? How dare you actually CARE about
this quaint notion of "laws".

That is SO yesterday. WHERE did you guys come from anyway? Are
you time-travelers from the last century? This isn't the Andy Griffith
Show anymore, not even Columbo. Now we just cut to the chase ..
boom! POOF! <--like that.

Get real people. Man-up for Christ sake.

Laws, Shmaws. Who needs 'em.. NOW we got paid killers with badges
& guns transparently enforcing a corporate agenda, we got drones, we
got NDAA trump-cards nullifying our "outdated" Constitution, Congress
is confirming one of corporate America's favorite Thugs to run the CIA,
we got tax-funded domestic Armies of well-seasoned SWAT teams (thanks
to the War on Drugs), we got 100% saturation surveillance, etc. Now we
got EVERYTHING we need, to just cut to the chase and murder "them".

Please understand, this is so much more practical. And not only that,
it's also so much cheaper to just torch or gun down our Evil Doers, rather
than giving them "3 hots and a cot" in some spendy private prison for the rest
of their sorry-ass lives.

Besides, dead lips are zipped lips. It's so much more discrete all around
to take out our Evil Doers summarily, along with their distorted version of events,
and just "get it over with". Their "wild stories" might even be taken seriously,
if known, and we don't want to encourage that kind of pandering.

Don't worry. You won't be next. If you've got nothing to hide, you'll be
just fine, just trust the corporate state, and all those untidy details will be ironed
out, out of sight (mostly - except when it's on the evening news),
out of mind. Well, unless we decide differently tomorrow.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

<-- Please note the sarcasm smilie is "on"

WTF is so "special" about Dorner & the LAPD, that unleashes Attack-Trolls on DU?

For some strange reason, in this particular case -- of someone going "postal" and going
on a murdering spree -- no one is supposed to have the slightest bit of interest
or curiosity about the back-story involved
: i.e. what the hell was going on internally
at the LAPD that led up to Dorner feeling "pushed over the line" to become a living
nightmare for policemen and their families everywhere?

In EVERY other case, of mass shootings, rogue gunmen (it's always a male it seems),
going on a killing spree, it has been A-OK -- even lauditory -- to carefully inquire into
what led up to this happening, what was the frame of mind of the person who went
off the rails, what was the shooter's relationship like with the institution(s) most
closely associated with his murderous rampage?

When it's a school or post office that suffers from one of these incidents, many legitimate
questions are delved into, as to whether the shooter had any kind of connections with the
school, what the nature of those connections were, how they effected his behavior, etc.

but for some odd reason, those very same questions in Dorner/LAPD care for some odd
reason "out of bounds" as in "nothing to see here - move along or I'll publicly slime the fuck
out of you".

Can someone please tell me why, when someone on DU expresses interest in ANY
of these questions, they are ruthlessly and relentlessly attacked with accusations like
"How can you possibly be JUSTIFYING the actions of this killer on the loose??"
or
some such. Which not only misses the point, but obscures and deflects and discourages
anyone from even "going there" because they don't want to be attacked like that.

This just isn't right.

In another Dorner OP today, someone quotes Rude Pundit pointing out that it is indeed
possible to hold TWO (or more) thoughts at the same time, without ones heads exploding
:
i.e. to abhor Dorner's murderous deeds, and to also want to better understand what led up to
him feeling pushed over the edge" to commit such atrocities. I wish more DUer had the
capacity to do that: hold both of these thoughts at the same time.

Can someone please explain this glaring double standard?

On edit: I removed paragraph about prior OP as it was serving only as a distraction from the
central question I was raising with this OP.

When W was president, progressive Democrats used to give a rats ass

about unconstitutional encroachments on our civil liberties, FEMA
camps, illegal wiretapping, renditions, torture, etc.

Now that Obama is POTUS, not so much.

Now, while Obama works his secret "kill list" and signs the NDAA,
the only people even still talking about FEMA camps are the Right-
wing-nuts like Alex Jones.

Well, I'm here to tell you that we are being "led" inch-by-inch -- ever
since the Kennedy and King assassinations -- steadily and surely along a
path toward becoming a neo-Fascist Corporatist Oligarchy, with an ever-
increasing number of citizens being incarcerated for dubious reasons, to
be "re-educated" and/or used as slave laborers.

This is what Eisenhower, John and Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King jr.
Bill Hicks, George Carlin, et. al. all saw coming, and tried in their way
to stop it. All of them failed. All of them are now dead.

Democracy Now: "Ask Brennan" about the blood on his hands from 2,629 dead Pakistanis

This nomination really turns my stomach, and for good reasons, as pointed out here
by Amy Goodman. This is making it extremely difficult to continue feeling very positive
about how Obama is starting his long-awaited second term.

Obama is literally erecting a monstrous National Security State apparatus in broad daylight,
a mission that Bush began, under the banner of "The War on Terrah", in the wake of 911.
Now Obama's doing what ONLY Obama COULD do (like Nixon going to China) i.e. finishing
the job of laying down binding precidents paving the way for the imposition of raw tyranny
under a less benevalent dictator to come. <--This gets to the core of my disgust.

Brennan was/is the Bush Crime Family's bag-man for torture, renditions and drone strikes,
which are both counter-productive and in flagrant violation of international law. Why is
Brennan not in prison?
.. is what I want to know .. instead of being fucking nominated
by Obama to head up the CIA for Christ's sake

____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*____*

AMY GOODMAN:
"Obama has once already considered Brennan for the top CIA job, back in 2008. Brennan withdrew his nomination then under a hail of criticism for supporting the Bush-era torture policies in his various top-level intelligence positions, including head of the National Counterterrorism Center.

(snip)

I asked Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell from 2002 to 2005, what he thought of Brennan. He told me: “What’s happening with drone strikes around the world right now is, in my opinion, as bad a development as many of the things we now condemn so readily, with 20/20 hindsight, in the George W. Bush administration. We are creating more enemies than we’re killing. We are doing things that violate international law. We are even killing American citizens without due process and have an attorney general who has said that due process does not necessarily include the legal process. Those are really scary words.”

(snip)

The BIJ reports a “minimum 2,629 people who appear to have so far died in CIA drone strikes in Pakistan.” John Brennan should be asked about each of them."
