Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Sequestration "taking a meat ax to our budget"

(CBS News) Faced with questions on "CBS This Morning" Thursday about a potential backup plan to get air traffic controllers back on the job amid deep FAA cuts, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said, "there is a plan." She didn't give details, but used the situation to speak of the issue of sequestration as a whole: "I have to tell you, this is about how bad sequestration is overall. This is taking a meat ax to our budget."

Warren cited cuts to the Head Start program and Meals on Wheels for seniors, adding, "The real point is sequestration is not a sensible way to deal with our financial problems. The job of Congress is to come together to find sensible spending cuts, which I think are on the table and have been offered, and to close some of the corporate loopholes so that they're paying their fair share to help fund this government."

Warren called for an end to the sequestration law. She said, "Right now there's a law in place that's the sequestration law that's about across-the-board cuts, has very little flexibility. That's what Congress adopted in order to try to avoid the fiscal cliff earlier. It just doesn't make sense. We need to get rid of it."

In addition to discussing federal cuts, Warren, of Boston, addressed how she's working to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing with One Fund Boston.

"People who are injured are going to have serious problems to deal with over a very long periods of time and we want to be there," she said. "We don't just want to be there today while the cameras are rolling. We want to be there next week and next month and next year.

PSA: Do not... DO NOT lose your driver's license *AND* your Social Security card.

I have my birth certificate from California (which took two months to arrive when I moved to New Jersey from Washington State. So that's 4 points.

My bank card is 1 point.

My Social Security card would be 1 point and would give me the 6 points I need to replace my driver's license... if I hadn't hid it in a place I wouldn't lose it...

You need your driver's license to get your Social Security card. You need your Social Security card to get your driver's license.

The only way I could get my driver's license was to exploit a crack in their system. Since the company I worked for this past few months paid me under the table I applied for welfare so I could get an ID card from them. I told the person who started my paper work that I'd be back on Friday with my driver's license. (True.) The person who created my photo ID thought I'd given proof of my ID. (Will be true come Friday.)

Now everyone is happy. But what do I do with $200.00 worth of food stamps? (Actually, I'll tell them I found a job and don't need them.)

Republicans back gay marriage ahead of vote in RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The five Republicans in the Rhode Island Senate are backing gay marriage as a legislative committee prepares for a pivotal vote on the issue.

The Senate Republican Caucus announced Tuesday that its members will support legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. The senators cite their support for liberty and limited government and say same-sex couples deserve the same marriage rights as anyone.

While the GOP caucus only holds five of the Senate's 38 seats, its support is another indication of the growing support for gay marriage in Rhode Island, now the only New England state that doesn't allow gay marriage.

The bill has already passed the House and the Senate Judiciary Committee will decide Tuesday whether to forward the measure to the full Senate for a debate.
