Wendy Davis: Bristol Palin's Parenting Diss 'Not True'

CATHERINE THOMPSON – JANUARY 28, 2014, 12:08 PM EST

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) said Monday that she is "very proud" of the job that she's done as a mother after the daughter of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Bristol, accused her of being a bad parent.

Fusion's Jorge Ramos asked Davis to respond to Palin's tweet linking to a blog post she wrote that characterized Davis as a woman "whose ambition and ego were so big she couldn’t have both a career and kids at the same time:"

Gosh, children are sooo inconvenient, huh? I’m glad my mother didn’t put motherhood on the shelf when she was elected to City Council, then became our mayor, then Governor. Oh sorry – I mentioned my mother… Have you liberals gone into a tail spin of hate already? Did I lose you?

I know you would rather think about Wendy Davis, so let’s get back to her. She’s more your type of woman. She left her kid, husband, made it into a false “made-for-tv-movie-type-tale” and then demanded that Texans have the right to kill babies. That’s the woman you libs can really get behind!

NY Cop Who Wished 'Muslim Commie' Obama Was Dead Gets To Keep His Job

Source: TPM

HUNTER WALKER – JANUARY 28, 2014, 6:05 PM EST

A police officer in Pleasantville, N.Y. found out this week he will get to keep his job despite creating a "Coon Trapper" Facebook page where he posted a racist rant about wishing President Obama was dead.

Pleasantville's Board of Trustees passed a resolution Monday that allowed the local police chief to discipline Officer Peter Burns with an approximately two-month suspension, sensitivity training, a psychological evaluation, the loss of vacation days, and a two year "last chance" probationary period, the Journal News reported.

Officer Burns apologized for the Facebook post, which he published on the "Coon Trapper" page on Dec. 11. According to the Journal News, Burns' post included the N-word and indicated he wanted to see the president dead.

“The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me,” Burns wrote. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie." After the post was shown to the police chief, Burns was suspended. He deleted his Facebook page the next day.

'Opportunity Is Who We Are': Excerpts From Obama's State Of The Union

-snip- One sentence intro -- Don

Below are excerpts from his speech, as released by the White House.

"In the coming months, let’s see where else we can make progress together. Let’s make this a year of action. That’s what most Americans want – for all of us in this chamber to focus on their lives, their hopes, their aspirations. And what I believe unites the people of this nation, regardless of race or region or party, young or old, rich or poor, is the simple, profound belief in opportunity for all – the notion that if you work hard and take responsibility, you can get ahead.

"Let’s face it: that belief has suffered some serious blows. Over more than three decades, even before the Great Recession hit, massive shifts in technology and global competition had eliminated a lot of good, middle-class jobs, and weakened the economic foundations that families depend on.

"Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by – let alone get ahead. And too many still aren’t working at all.

"Our job is to reverse these tides. It won’t happen right away, and we won’t agree on everything. But what I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class, and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class. Some require Congressional action, and I’m eager to work with all of you. But America does not stand still – and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do.”

“Opportunity is who we are. And the defining project of our generation is to restore that promise.”

READ: Excerpts From GOP's State Of The Union Response

Below are some excerpts from her speech, as released by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) office.

“The most important moments right now aren’t happening here. They’re not in the Oval Office or in the House Chamber. They’re in your homes. Kissing your kids goodnight. Figuring out how to pay the bills. Getting ready for tomorrow’s doctor’s visit. Waiting to hear from those you love serving in Afghanistan, or searching for that big job interview. After all, ‘We the People’ have been the foundation of America since her earliest days – people from all walks of life, and from all corners of the world – people who come to America because here, no challenge is too great and no dream too big.”

"So tonight I’d like to share a more hopeful, Republican vision – one that empowers you, not the government. It’s one that champions free markets – and trusts people to make their own decisions, not a government that decides for you. It helps working families rise above the limits of poverty and protects our most vulnerable. And it’s one where Washington plays by the same rules that you do. It’s a vision that is fair and offers the promise of a better future for every American.”

“Because our mission – not only as Republicans, but as Americans, is to once again to ensure that we are not bound by where we come from, but empowered by what we can become. That is the gap Republicans are working to close. It’s the gap we all face: between where you are and where you want to be.”

“Last month, more Americans stopped looking for a job than found one. Too many people are falling further and further behind because, right now, the President’s policies are making people’s lives harder. Republicans have plans to close the gap…Plans that focus on jobs first without more spending, government bailouts, and red tape…Every day, we’re working to expand our economy, one manufacturing job, nursing degree and small business at a time. We have plans to improve our education and training systems so you have the choice to determine where your kids go to school…to help you take home more of your paycheck...with lower taxes, cheaper energy costs, and affordable health care.”

“We’ve all talked to too many people who have received cancellation notices they didn’t expect or who can no longer see the doctors they always have. No, we shouldn’t go back to the way things were, but the President’s health care law is not working. Republicans believe health care choices should be yours, not the government’s. And that whether you’re a boy with Down syndrome or a woman with breast cancer, you can find coverage and a doctor who will treat you.”

“As Republicans, we advance these plans every day because we believe in a government that trusts people and doesn’t limit where you finish because of where you started. That is what we stand for – for an America that is every bit as compassionate as it is exceptional…Our plan is one that dreams big for everyone and turns its back on no one.”

Appeals Court Will Expedite Oklahoma Gay Marriage Case

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – JANUARY 28, 2014, 6:18 PM EST

A federal appeals court on Tuesday announced it will expedite the same-sex marriage case in Oklahoma, according to The Oklahoman.

A federal judge earlier in January struck down the state's ban on gay marriage. The ruling was stayed while the state appeals the decision.

The same panel of judges hearing the gay marriage appeal in Utah will consider Oklahoma's case, according to The Oklahoman.

Fort Lee Development Linked To State Pension Funds

Source: TPM

ERIC LACH – JANUARY 28, 2014, 5:35 PM EST

One of the companies involved in a billion-dollar development in Fort Lee, N.J. secured state pension funds as part of the financing of the project, PolitickerNJ reported on Tuesday.

Documents obtained by the PolitickerNJ show that the State of New Jersey Common Pension Fund E holds a majority 55 percent ownership interest in the Tucker Development and Acquisition Fund, L.P. The rest of the entity is divvied up between Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (a 27.5 percent ownership interest), Prudential Insurance Companies of America (a 16.5 percent ownership interest), and Tucker Managers, LLC (a one percent ownership interest.) The document was officially recorded by the Bergen County, N.J. county clerk on May 16, 2012.

The Tucker Development Corporation is one of the companies behind the Hudson Lights project, which is being built on the western eight-acre portion of a 16-acre redevelopment area in Fort Lee, located beside the entrance to the George Washington Bridge. The proximity of the project to the bridge has led to speculation that the bridge lane closures that occurred in September -- and that this month have exploded into a political scandal for Gov. Chris Christie (R) -- were somehow connected to the project. But no link has yet been publicly demonstrated.

On Sept. 16, Tucker Development Corporation announced that it had secured $218 million in financing for the Hudson Lights project. In a press release, the company described the project as a joint partnership between "affiliates of Tucker Development Corporation, Ares Management and Kushner Real Estate Group."

Ron Paul Promises To Deliver The 'REAL' State Of The Union

CAITLIN MACNEAL – JANUARY 28, 2014, 3:53 PM EST

Ron Paul will join the chorus of conservatives responding to President Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday by live tweeting the "REAL State of the Union."

"What useless rhetoric will we hear from President Obama this year?" he asked on his website.

"Far too often, our 'leaders' fail to provide the American people with the truth. What's most telling about the State of the Union is less about what Obama says and more about what he withholds or ignores," he said. "Where do we really stand as a nation?"

Paul's son, Rand Paul, will also deliver his own response to the speech.

McCaskill To Rand: Don’t You Dare Play The Lewinsky Card

TOM KLUDT – JANUARY 28, 2014, 2:02 PM EST

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is incensed that Rand Paul dredged up a scandal from the 1990s.

McCaskill ripped the Kentucky senator on Tuesday for saying that Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky undermines Democratic claims of the GOP's "war on women" and that, fair or unfair, the scandal could be a factor in Hillary Clinton's anticipated presidential campaign.

"I think I can speak for most women to say that I found what he said infuriating. I think most women understand they should not be held accountable for the behavior of their husbands," McCaskill told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. "You know, frankly, it was a long time ago. Our country did very well under the leadership of Bill Clinton."

Paul accused former President Clinton on Sunday of engaging in "predatory behavior" with Lewinsky and, pointing to the successful female members of his family, argued that there is no such thing as a "war on women."

Rand Paul: Bill Clinton's Affair Still Terrible, But Doesn't 'Apply' To Hillary

CATHERINE THOMPSON – JANUARY 28, 2014, 2:28 PM EST

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) still thinks former President Bill Clinton's '90s-era affair with a White House intern was deplorable, even if he concedes the scandal “doesn’t really apply” to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Paul accused Bill Clinton of "predatory behavior" on Sunday's "Meet the Press," and said the scandal could factor into a potential Hillary Clinton presidential bid even if it wasn't her fault.

In a Tuesday interview with Politico, the Kentucky Republican emphasized that he didn't dredge Bill Clinton's past up himself. Rather, he had been asked about his wife's critical remark about the former president in Vogue magazine.

“It’s not as if I’m bringing this up 20 years later. I was asked a direct question,” he said. “However, if I’m asked a direct question, I’ll usually answer it. And I think that one of the things that have moved forward, one of the things that was rotten about the old patriarchal system we did have, was that bosses took advantage of young women in the workplace."
