FIFTY years ago, Jan. 21-23, 1966: Grateful Dead, Big Brother headline Haight "Trips Festival"

On Jan. 21-23, 1966, the Longshoremen’s Hall in San Francisco was the site of the Trips Festival. The event, which featured performances by the Grateful Dead and Big Brother & the Holding Company, is widely credited with being the start of the hippie counterculture that would emerge within the next year.

The Trips Festival was the brainchild of author Ken Kesey, who was conducting “acid tests” — wild parties in the Bay Area that featured music, dancing, theater, strobe lights, Day-Glo paint and free access to LSD, which was legal at the time. He and writer Stewart Brand decided to take it to the next level and spread out the acid tests over three days. More than 6,000 people filled the hall.

Promoter Bill Graham helped organize the event, billed as a “new medium of communication & entertainment” that promised “a JUBILANT occasion where the audience PARTICIPATES because it’s more fun to do so than not.”

The acid test was held on Saturday, Jan. 22, featuring punch spiked with LSD. Tom Wolfe described the scene in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. “Lights and movies sweeping around the hall; five movie projectors going and God knows how many light machines, interferrometrics, the intergalactic science-fiction seas all over the walls, loudspeakers studding the hall all the way around like flaming chandeliers, strobes exploding, black lights with Day-Glo objects under them and Day-Glo paint to play with, street lights at every entrance flashing red and yellow, two bands, the Grateful Dead and Big Brother & the Holding Company and a troop of weird girls in leotards leaping around the edges blowing dog whistles.”

Carly Fiorina Just Unleashed an Unhinged Rant Against Hillary Clinton

—By Max J. Rosenthal

Carly Fiorina brought down the house at tonight's GOP undercard debate with a long, vicious rant against Hillary Clinton that included everything from a recycled El Chapo joke to a call to indict Clinton over her role in Benghazi. Or because of her emails. Or something.

Here's a quick rundown of the things Fiorina accused Clinton of:

Being a wannabe dictator: "Hillary Clinton would do anything to gain and hold onto power, anything." That's why she didn't leave Bill, apparently.

Wrongly refusing to leave her husband: "If my husband did what Bill Clinton did, I would have left him long ago." Fiorina insisted that line "wasn't a personal attack."

This Facebook commenter's post may not make you feel any better about Ted Cruz.

This was posted in response to the Dick Dynasty prick Phil Robertson encouraging us all to vote for Cruz instead of Trump because Cruz is "a man of God."

Omo Jesu Fagbolu Esther

Absolutely. Compared to Trump, I believe wholeheartedly that Ted Cruz is a God- fearing man who will humbly get on his knees everyday in the WH if he does anything wrong or make mistakes I don't see Trump do that, he's too proud to ask God for forgiveness after all. I believe character and humility should matter in a leader.

Michigan cadaver dealer indicted over body parts

http://www.wcnc.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/01/29/mich-cadaver-dealer-indicted-body-parts/79545226/

DETROIT — It was 2006 when Arthur Rathburn's name and morbid profession first surfaced in a book called Body Brokers, which delved into the underground world of cadaver dealers and labeled him a shady mortician who sold and rented heads, necks and legs for a handsome profit.

On Friday, after years of being watched by the FBI, Rathburn of Grosse Pointe Park was indicted on numerous charges in U.S. District Court in Detroit, accused of running a nationwide scheme that involved cutting up bodies without consent and renting heads, arms and legs riddled with disease to unsuspecting medical researchers.

A dazed and homeless Rathburn sat in court on Friday, reading the 19-page indictment that accused him of heinous acts, like cutting up bodies with chainsaws, shipping blood-filled coolers of fresh heads on commercial airliners — falsely claiming the blood was Listerine — and storing more than 1,000 body parts on ice at his rundown warehouse in Detroit.

Rathburn, who has been living out of his van and his warehouse pending a divorce, was ordered jailed over the weekend, though he could be released on bond next week and placed in a halfway house. His estranged wife, Elizabeth Rathburn, also was charged in the indictment and appeared in court with her sister. She was released on bond and said nothing as she left the federal courthouse, hiding her face behind a stack of white papers.

What exactly is Carly Fiorina's endgame?

She has to know that pontificating in Bill and Hillary's marriage is gutter politics.

The "El Chapo" remarks were tired and weak from the get-go, yet she keeps repeating them.

Her past at HP is going to follow her to the grave.

I've heard a lot of people say that Ben Carson's motive is to sell books.

What exactly is Fiorina hoping to accomplish here? Re-defining her "legacy," or something else?

Yacht belonging to Microsoft's Paul Allen destroys 14,000 sq ft of protected coral reef in Caymans

Microsoft Tycoon's Yacht Blamed In Reef Damage

The vessel's anchor chain raked almost 14,000 sq ft of protected coral at a Cayman Islands dive site, say environmental officials.

A super yacht belonging to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has caused serious damage to protected coral reef in the Cayman Islands, according to officials.

The vessel's anchor chain destroyed almost 14,000 sq ft of protected reef, amounting to more than 80% of the coral at the site, the islands' Department of Environment told the Cayman News Service.

The tech tycoon was not aboard the 300ft (95 metre) vessel, The Tatoosh, at the time, said Cayman officials.

Ironically, Mr Allen, who has a $18.1bn (£12.6bn) fortune, runs a charitable foundation that works to protect oceans.
