If Chris Christie is too liberal for them, there's zero chance of a liberal candidate emerging from the GOP.

Besides, there are still other people running who would be on the ballot. The only way your hypothetical works is if Trump's the only one running. GOP voters aren't going to nominate a liberal over one of the current other candidates.
