When he ran for Senate the first time he did so to defeat a liberal republican in 1988 (yes, they did exist and he was more liberal than Lieberman). His name was Lowell Weicker and one of his big platforms was to normalize relations with Cuba. That was the issue of the campaign and Lieberman got the votes of conservative Republicans winning by just 10K votes.

No, I will never forget. I like Weicker. This was a time when there really were good people on both sides. Lieberman was not one of them.
