(19,313 posts)Three good-sized dogs got into the pasture, and had ripped a chunk out of one of our dairy cows by the time my dad and I heard the commotion and got out there in the truck. I hit one of them in the hip with my .22, it went down, and the other two ran off. It was still alive though, so I had to shoot it again, and then my dad went driving around knocking on neighbor's doors. No one admitted that it was their dog, because doing so would mean they'd have to pay the vet bill to sew up the cow's leg. So we had to eat the cost to get her patched up.
It wasn't something I was ever proud of doing, nor something I would publish in a memoir of my life. But those cattle put food on the table. It was an unspoken rule out in the country: if your dog attacked livestock, don't expect to see it again.
