(102,721 posts)and yes, she did open doors for other women comics. For that she deserves accolades. She also was treated shabbily--as have many in entertainment, but especially women of that era. And yes, she rose above both the career crap and the personal tragedies to become a respected fixture in the business.
That said, the comment re: Palestinians deserving to die is not "black comedy".... She may have meant to say something different, but sadly, she did not live long enough to move past that dreadful comment. --> Seems a lesson for us all. NO one knows if today is our last, so some of that horrendously hyperbolic and emotion filled commenting surely could haunt us
Still, I look at the lifetime of the person and career... not simply the most recent.
