6. Abuse of Mentally Ill Prisoners is Common

My son was jailed last year in a county jail. He was psychotic and suffering from withdrawal from drugs.

He got no services or medications for his symptoms. When the guards tried to move him to a higher level of supervision. When he resisted, five guards tackled and tased him. He was taken to isolation where he spent three weeks. When his sentence was completed, he was released directly to the streets.

We have spent hundreds of dollars to get records of his incarceration, training records for the individual guards, and specific details of his circumstances. Our findings show that guards have little relevant training in methods to defuse confrontational behaviors by mentally ill prisoners. With over half of the jail population suffering from a mental health diagnosis, this is unacceptable. We are shaing our finding with members of the County Commission, and advocating for reforms.

We are happy to report that our son is doing well, and is on the road to recovery.

The Florida situation is a conspiracy and a homicide. The guards AND the chain of command should be jailed. The prosecutor should resign.
