broken diplomatic relations with Ecuador, which forcibly entered the Mexican Embassy on April 5th to arrest Ecuador's former VP, who had been granted asylum there.

Back to Iran, Israel, and the strike on the consulate in Damascus, the targets apparently were two Iranian generals. Five other officers were also killed. They were in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, which parallels much of Iran's military, similar to how the Nazi Waffen SS paralleled the German Wehrmacht. One of the generals commanded the IRGC Quds force which has the leading role in equipping and funding Iran's surrogates and proxies, the most loyal and competent of which is the Lebanese Hizballah. Quds Force has also conducted external direct action along the lines of the US Joint Special Operations Command's Delta and Seal Team Six. The Quds Force was the primary supplier of explosively formed penetrating munitions used against the US military serving in Iraq.

Israel has a long memory and while it's possible that Israel targeted them in retaliation for past actions. But since they went to the extreme step of targeting a consulate, I'd infer it's more likely that it was to disrupt current planning.
