Ann Kirkpatrick beats John McCain in latest fundraising figures [View all]
Democratic Senate challenger U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick appears to have handily out-raised incumbent U.S. Sen. John McCain over a six-week period this summer.
For the Federal Election Commission's "pre-primary" reporting period, from July 1 to Aug. 10, Kirkpatrick's campaign said it raised more than $1 million. McCain, R-Ariz., "deposited" only more than $550,000. The term used by his campaign could suggest the figure includes money other than contributions, such as bank interest.
In cash on hand, however, McCain remains well ahead of Kirkpatrick. His campaign has at least $5 million, while a Kirkpatrick spokesman said her campaign had $2.2 million at the end of the period. More details will be available once the actual campaign-finance reports are made public later this month.
In a statement, Kirkpatrick, a three-term member of the House from Flagstaff, characterized the fundraising disparity as a sign that "Republicans, Democrats and Independents are all tired of John McCain putting himself and his political career first."
I am honored that so many Arizonans have rallied behind this campaign to bring new, principled leadership to the U.S. Senate, Kirkpatrick said. ... Our campaign continues to build momentum every day, and we will continue to fight in every community to ensure our state elects a new senator this November.
