I've got to rant about my right wing aunt and uncle

They are driving me crazy on facebook. When I was growing up, my aunt and uncle were the good time party people, so much into drinking and having fun that they made the decision not to have kids so that they wouldn't cut down on their party time. A great decision, as far as I'm concerned. I always liked them because they were fun, although my mom didn't approve and we didn't get to see them often because of her. Now, though, my uncle has retired from the military and they've both gotten into being Republicans, big time. I turned off my uncle's status feed, because he is definitely the smarter and more convinced of the two, and he was making me angry every time I saw one of his statuses. But my aunt is getting increasingly mean and nasty, too. Her latest post is a mean spirited wish list for Christmas- closed borders, drug testing for welfare applicants, etc. This is from a woman who grew up on welfare. When my grandpa died, my grandma had 5 kids, two of them babies less than a year apart, and she had little choice at first. And now this aunt is all against welfare and anything else that doesn't benefit her right now.

The other thing that drives me insane is that suddenly, after years and years of making fun of my grandma's religiousness, they have apparently found religion themselves. Ok, fair enough, but suddenly my aunt is posting all this war on Christmas crap and about how Christmas is all about Jesus to her... um, yeah just a few years ago it was all about the alcohol. I guess this Jesus they are so newly crazy about is different from the one I learned about when I was a kid, because his concerns bear no resemblance to the ones we were told he had.

I know it's just typical mindless right wing unreflective crap, but it irritates me badly that my aunt, who has no business whatsoever embracing such nastiness, has done it anyway and she's brainlessly proud of herself for it.

1. Go all passive-aggressive on them

For example, on "welfare" (which doesn't exist anymore), you could say to your aunt, "Gee, it's probably good your notions of punitive measures against the unfortunte wasn't the prevailing sentiment when you were growing up." If you want, you could probably bring Jesus into the mix, and ask how she squares her attitudes with that "serve one another in love" stuff from the Bible.

Or, just un-friend them and let them wend their bitter path to the inevitable.

4. Serious reply: I wonder if the years of alcohol

abuse messed up your aunt's ability to reason. I have seen nice people get mean when they are drinking...I have no idea if that lasts, or has a long term affect on the brain/ personality.
