So Anti's, if you cannot prevent criminals from getting illegal drugs......
how will you even prevent them from getting guns?

Guns are legal to manufacturer and sell. They always have been. So that means there are millions of guns legally owned by citizens.

Heroin (just to name one), is illegal to manufacturer, transport or possess. Yet anyone can buy it in any city in the USA any day of the week.

How in the world are you going to prevent criminals from obtaining handguns when the "war on drugs" has not stopped Heroin from being easily available?

I think the anti-gun crowd here does not realize it is impossible to prevent criminals from owning hand guns. I agree we should continue to try to prevent them from owning hand guns, because they are criminals. But preventing honest citizens from owning hand guns is not the solution to criminals having them.

Looking forward to intelligent responses.

1. Don't you know? Criminals never do anything illegal
They obey every law - that's why they're called "Outlaws"

They're all out in the streets in support of laws!

2. A: they don't want to stop criminals from getting guns...that would ruin their agenda.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-11 02:47 PM by ileus
To most, criminals are just the down trodden that are taking what they deserve...people with guns legally, those are the real threats. Gun owners insist on keeping a right that they feel is outdated and doesn't fit in with modern society.

road rage, domestic violence, Kids, suicide, drinking, mishandling, there are so many way a firearm can be misused they're willing to accept that criminals use them and that's okay. All those other misuses outweigh crime in the mind of the anti.

4. It has to do with the creation of a slur. A 'clever' little inside joke.
Like the Right's use of 'urban.'

6. Plenty of slurs against gun owners, right here in this forum...
gun toters
gun fetishists
gun militants

Just to name a few. I personally prefer Gun Prohibitionist, for describing people who don't like, and want to restrict or ban guns. Or just Prohibitionist. Or even Prohi.

5. I have no idea where in my town, or who
I could buy heroin from. I don't think anyone that sells it would sell it to me. On the other hand, I can go to any gun show in the state and buy a handgun, no questions asked.
When I lived in a state that required a permit to purchase a handgun, I had no problem, being a honest legal citizen in purchasing handguns. If I lived in a state that did require registration of handguns, I as a legal buyer would not be prevented from purchasing one. I don't think most average, legal gun owners would object to either. Of course that would not stop all criminals from getting guns, it would just make it more difficult for them. I have no problem with making it more difficult for them.

Not entirely true. There would be questions asked.

9. The Extreme here would say to shut down the gun/ammo
industry. You turn it off at the spigot then as guns are confiscated in crimes or otherwise the number would gradually be reduced, or so he says.

12. Close to 300 million guns in the US...
Currently, authorities destroy about 100,000 confiscated "crime guns" per year. So in that case, the US would be firearms free in about 3,000 years.

21. I think probably not.
I assume that LEOs and the military would still be armed.
LEOs and the military would still be subject to having their guns taken from them.

I can see some kind of cottage industry springing up in some areas where an urban sniper would just take out a cop or two simply so an accomplice could collect the guns. Once again; they don't respect the law, that's why they're called "criminals".

Patrick Henry: "Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined...The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun."

11. It's even worse than that: you can't manufacture heroin here in the United States.
Nor can you manufacture cocaine. The plants don't grow here, so it has to be imported, thousands of miles, though one of the most extensive anti-smuggling systems yet devised by man.

You can, however, manufacture firearms here. In fact, given a $5k CNC milling machine and cheap raw materials, anyone with the wits can make a professional quality handgun in a garage.

You can make a full auto submachine gun from scratch if you're willing to risk Federal time.

18. True, but they're not the weapons of choice for the vast majority of criminals.
Handguns are. I know you realize this, just explaining my reasons for choosing that particular analogy.

20. Interestingly, SMGs are more common with criminals in the UK and the Netherlands
That is to say, more common than in the US, not more common than handguns. It makes sense that they would be, mind you, because when the penalty for possessing an illegal automatic weapon is equally severe as the penalty for possessing a handgun, why wouldn't you acquire an SMG? They're about equally expensive to make, anyway.

Since some tattletail alerted on it, having no real response. This is very common in the gungeon. Got no response? Just call in the mods.

Heroin (just to name one), is illegal to manufacturer, transport or possess. Yet anyone can buy it in any city in the USA any day of the week.

I live in a major US city, one of its largest. I would not know where to purchase heroin on any given day, could not walk out tonight and get some. So that premise is ridiculous. "Anyone" cannot buy herron in "any city" on "any day of the week." That statement is simply false. But I COULD go out right now and purchase a handgun if I wanted to.

I think the anti-gun crowd here does not realize it is impossible to prevent criminals from owning hand guns.

I think the pro-gun people still don't get it after all these years (or deliberately misrepresent the pro-control postition). The idea is not to prevent criminals from owning handguns. The idea is to make it more difficult for them to acquire guns of any kind. Do you note the difference between these two concepts? Lets go back to the herrron analogy. Logical is wrong (just plain wrong) to assert that I could easily go out and purchase herrrrrron tonight. It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be difficult. If there was a herrrron department at Wal-Mart, it would be much easier. See how that works?

Let's look at the NFA of 1934. This act effectively makes it illegal for the vast majority of Americans to own certain classes of weapons, including heavy machine guns, rocket launchers etc. By the NRA's logic, your average street criminal must have these weapons, yet in reality they do not.

This is another case where reality contradicts the NRA talking point.
