chaff away the data (election facts, dates, election results, historical events, etc.) and all that's left are unattributed, conveniently anonymous quibbles, vague interviews with 2 or 3 highly untrustworthy, highly-potentially spurious sources (cardinal rule in journalism: gauge the credibility of your sources, and whether an ulterior motive or existing grudges, enmities etc. *might* make their "Testimony" less reliable or pure BS).

and then on top of that a bunch of unverifiable double-speak that clearly has a pre-judged agenda (another cardinal rule of journalism: remain objective, especially as the reporter in relation to your story; i know the MSM ridiculously contravenes this tenet, but if you want me or any one else here to believe the account and not just you or your reporter, consider his/her own ulteriors and patent lack of credibility...)

show me a journalist who doesn't "have his recorder running" for key interviews, let alone any sanctioned interview, with a politician. there are none, at least none who can hold on to a job. "let me hear the tape" would be the first thing any editor would demand not just to save his own ass and job but to verify the credibility of what s/he will have responsibility for when it reaches print. you see in journalism schools they teach you that corroboration of facts and interviews is central not just to the ethics of the field, but to its operation.

then add to that the grand scale of hearsay, innuendo, and equivocation, together with swaths of "evidence" "unfortunately" not "verifiable" not because it was off the record but because somehow there was no record ever made, and we're supposed to believe this clown? please, at least be more professional and academically and ethically responsible in your choices of criticism of your opponent.

But Obama will not be able to maintain that "above politics" stance. If his broad themes are to remain credible, he will have to be more than a smooth and sweet-talking optimist. He will have to detail just what he would do on health, global warming, Iran. Is he tough-minded enough not just to take a punch but to give one? People who know him well doubt this.
