Red Oak Express new manager/editor goes after Steve King.
This is the second editorial he has published that is light-years left of the norm for the local paper. I wonder if we need to establish a network of safe houses to protect him.

From "Understanding what freedom stands for"

Snip

Fair enough. I’ll even accept that in the Patriot Act’s first four years, and even until now, there have been no misuse of power, although considering the veil of secrecy provided to the government, we can’t really know for certain. But for the sake of argument, I’ll accept it.

However, using that same logic, you could advocate giving your monkey a loaded gun. The monkey hasn’t shot himself or anyone else in the first four years, so it must be ok.

Not really.

Even more ironically, King was responding to an audience member’s question regarding a Homeland Security report that classifies many segments of the extreme conservative faction as enemies of the state. Taken to an extreme, the report can be interpreted as basically anyone who opposes any of President Obama’s policies could be branded as an enemy of the state.

While Congressman King decried this sort of action, generating a hardy round of applause from his GOP supporters in the crowd, it’s interesting to see Republicans now attacking Democrats for disregarding constitutional rights in the exact opposite of what occurred during the 2005 Patriot Act debate.

previous one about how smart Americans are and Health Care Debate

Snip

Last time they did this, Hilary Clinton was first lady and her husband was at the top of the game. But like Sara Palin in a geography contest, the Clinton’s health care plan bombed big time.

Now Obama is taking another shot at it, although I can’t say I’m too surprised it came in the first year of his presidency. That way, if it fails, he has three years to recover.

And it may very well fail. The machine is back up and running, and spewing out more disinformation. The health care plan means all old people will have a death meeting every five years (they won’t). The government plan will be mandatory (it isn’t.) It will mean the end of the world for insurance companies (it won’t.)

The advertising campaign is in full swing, well funded by private insurance companies who don’t want government competition, doctors who want more malpractice reform and less intervention, and abortion foes who oppose any possibility of a federally-funded abortion

We even have pro-left letters to the editor that were very very rare until now. I haven't met him yet and I hope I don't run up and kiss him when I do.

1. Great news!
Steve King needs someone to rattle his cage every now and then.

Here in West Branch, the local newspaper has had a long string of very liberal editors. A couple years ago the liberal editor left to go to law school at William and Mary back East. The next editor came in right out of the box with some really right-wing editorials. The publishers must have gotten a lot of phone calls and e-mails, because within a couple weeks, the new editor toned it down considerable. You can still tell he's right wing, but he isn't so in-your-face about it. Tolerable now. Keep us posted on your new guy.

3. Love this line:
