Acadiana Thread
Are yall OK? Rain in Abbeville now. Wind picking up, but nothing sustained, just mild gusts.

Did you see the pic on the GD page of the young man sitting in front of the Super Dome with his head in his hands? Broke my heart. Damn.

Maybe if we stay on this thread, it will be less confusing for others who also post in the LA forum? Just sayin'

1. I have rarely seen ignorance like I have seen on these hurricane posts!!!
One poster made a remark about people leaving in their cars, only a couple of people per car. Well, I left Baton Rouge at 12:30AM. Got to Jackson, MS at 5:00AM. At every stop I made, EVERY vehicle that was fleeing the storm was filled with people. with their belongings for who knows how many days thrown in as an afterthought. Most of these people do NOT expect to even have a home if or when they return. On the roads yesterday and today I didn't see anyone taking such leisurely drives. Everyone I know is getting out of the area and taking as many people as they can with them. Those include Democrats, Republicans, Black, White, whatever classification you want. There are alot of people who HAVE been helped out by people they never knew but I guess those people were doing it for some unknown selfish reason and not to help their fellow man.

As for those people getting stuck in New Orleans, Mayor Nagin, who is minority for those who keep track of such things, did everything he could to tell these people to leave. The Sherriff, Harry Lee, told everyone all weekend to get out in no uncertain terms. Alot of people simply do NOT think it will be that bad. I have a good friend who is in tears because her idiot 18 year old son will not leave the quarter because he thinks its not that big a deal. Alot of people were told and chose not to leave. WHAT can government do in those cases? The problem is that these people who are now showing up at the dome are stuck. There will be no safe place but that structure in the city if its a direct hit.

As for the cruel heartless rich, I know several who are doing everything they can to help. One owns a lumber company. He will lose about 2 million dollars in lumber when in New Orleans when his yard goes underwater. He still has been up non stop from his home in Monroe, LA arranging for 18 wheelers to bring in plywood, generators, water, ice, and other necessities to give out at his distribution centers and no, he is not making money off of this stuff. He geniunely cares what happens to people.

In Baton Rouge, Mayor Holden, recently elected minority mayor, is not even IN THE CITY!!!! His assistant is handling everything and refuses to comment on where the mayor is and when he will return.

There are only so many roads that exit the city because of its being closed in by water. Once the winds get to a certain point, you can not let anyone on those causeways.

This storm rose to such fury in a hurry and caught alot of people by surprise. No one expected the clone of Camille to suddenly appear this weekend. There are a lot of good people, poor, rich, middle class who have tried to help and make a difference. However, at some point nature does overwhelm these efforts. If it hits New Orleans, there will be tragedy. It IS sickening. It is maddening. Short of sending 100K troops door to door to get people, it would have been impossible to get alot of people out in time.

As for people saying they have no where to go, that is so stupid on its face. Just GET OUT!!! If all you are doing is waiting at a rest area on the state line or somewhere else, at least you are not there where the city will be underwater if a direct hit takes place. I am speaking in general of course. There will be some who have no means etc to get out of town but there is no way to get to all of them either. The Mayor would've had to commandeer every bus, etc in the first 24 hours. the problem with these storms also is they are so unpredictable that at what point do you make these decisions.

Too often there is no right time and no matter what judgement you make there will be criticism. Bush probably could not have done much different (and before anyone bashes me I have never voted for him and never will).

I should apologize for offending some but I do not care at this point. I guess I am not an expert on this tragedy as I live down here and am too close to it as compared to those of you who live in the ivory towers from which you can spew forth your intelligent and knowledgeable comments about the storms impact and the residents in the area. I frankly am disgusted by some of the posts and the first thought for this person with 3 degrees was to grab a baseball bat. However, I am too busy taking in people from New Orleans up here in jackson to think about this anymore after I write this post.

I will say that alot of you do NOT know what you are talking about. Alot of good people will die in this tragedy if it pans out like we t hink it will. Alot of GOOD people are going to lose their homes, jobs, loved ones, and things that are precious to them. For them to be ridiculed by some of you on this board is outrageous and beyond the pale and merely shows the anger that you have over something in your own pathetic life.

2. Ann I think an Acadiana thread is a great idea
We had a squall of wind and rain come through here a little while ago. Iberia Parish office of emergency preparedness is saying we should see sustained winds of 20-30 mph starting tonight, with sustained winds of 30-50 and 60 mph gusts tomorrow. Just got off the phone with my brother-in-law. He is on a tug in Lake Verrett, just north of Morgan City. They are staying on the boat to ride out the storm. :scared: I've been watching the storm all day, and I don't see where it is taking that turn to the north yet in a major way. Things could get tricky here if it doesn't turn soon. It's real quiet here now....frighteningly quiet. I guess this must be the proverbial "lull before the storm". Everybody keep in touch. :grouphug:

3. good luck from the left coast ya'll, and godspeed to NOLA....
I'm a former Gulf coaster (panhandle area). Lots of folks just don't understand what a real monster storm can do. Even well back from the coast, watch for the flooding. Ya'll be safe.

4. HI
"and I don't see where it is taking that turn to the north yet in a major way. Things could get tricky here if it doesn't turn soon."

and that's what I've been so worried about. And, it's beginning to get dark. Which TV or radio station is giving the best info regarding track, in your opinion?

Did we say something to offend the above poster?

Is your bro-in-law crazy? Alot of the people around here too get on their boats and put them into canals. I don't see it, myself, but they think it's safer.

Looks like Iberia Parish may get rougher weather than us in Verm Parish, so you stay safe, and check in so we don't worry!

6. I don't know what that person's problem is
I don't see where we said anything that could offend anyone. My bro-in-law is a tug captain and they have been working 24/7 bringing stuff in from the rigs before the storm hits. He says that they will tie up between some barges and even if the boat flips the lower decks are watertight so they shouldn't have a problem. (In my opinion...yeah right. Being upside down in a boat during a hurricane is not a really great thing in my mind) I've been listening to WWL all day. They are broadcasting from inside the Superdome now. They seem to have the best updates, but I don't know how much longer I'll be able to get their signal. So at some point I'll have to rely on KANE. Worse yet, we just found out my husband's 82 year old Uncle, (who lives in New Orleans about a mile from the French Quarter) did not evacuate. He refuses to leave his house. Several members from his family tried to get him to leave with them, but he refused to go. He won't even go to the Superdome. I'm just sick.

7. OMG, Finecraft....I am SO sorry.
If there is a god, and if there are miracles, I pray that he will be OK. Perhaps they took him to the Super Dome? Please keep us updated.

You know, I know the Super Dome wasn't designed for this, and all of those poor people may be doomed, but I am upset about all of the posts over on GD...those people have gone nutso, screaming about "sitting ducks"...complaining about the actions of the officials....they are second-guessing everything, like they really know....like they really live here. I am so disappointed in DUers there...not on this forum of course, but I am beginning to see what poster #1 was talking about.

Channel 11 just announced a number of radio stations that are giving constant coverage around Acadiana: I think these are all AM:

101.1
102.9
104.7

one other that I can't remember, lol!

8. We don't even have shelters here
The red cross and state officials won't operate official shelters below I-10. I remember when Lili hit, we had no shelters in Iberia parish. Some people tried to get into the shelters the city of St. Martinville set up in St. Martin parish, but they wouldn't let them in. One local motel owner opened up all of his empty rooms, and his mini-mall property on Main Street, at no charge to those that couldn't evacuate and couldn't stay in their homes. The Superdome may not have been designed for this, but I guarantee you its a lot better than some of the schools they are using for shelters in parts of Florida. In a perfect world, I guess every city would have a municipal shelter that would be available, but we don't live in a perfect world so we just have to do the best we can.....and pray.

9. just checking in here
after reading of the post in another forum. I am not in LA, and i don't know why i didn't think of the state forums before now.
The above poster just joined today (btw, welcome :hi: to prplhze2000 ) and i think being there in the panic and distress does make one rightfully sensitive to some posts here that i have also read, and have just closed them and refuse to comment.

I personally don't care if freepers blame Clinton, if *moron is awol as usual, or if human nature of the evacuating masses is senseless in regards to others. Unless i'm in that situation myself, i can't judge others for their actions under pressure like they are. It would be wonderful if we all were thinking of the safety of others at all times, but at times like these, we do act from gut perhaps, and not heart. It's the last minutes before the crisis escalates into what appears to be a catastrophic incident unlike many have seen in their lifetimes in the usa.

that said, i hope the newcomer above feels some solidarity with the other locals checking in here, i hope the best for those still in the dangerous areas, and hope to the gods this will turn out better than is being forecast.

i do believe 99.9% of DU'ers are hoping for the best for you all, and just some don't realize the way their opinion is being taken by those in the danger zone.

peace to you all in LA.

10. Ann- 7:00 PM numbers show movement of .3 North, .1 West
since the last update. Lets hope this means that it has started its turn North! If it keeps this track, the eye should come ashore between Houma and New Orleans.

11. Whew....that's cutting it a bit close, isn't it? (Finecraft)
Finecraft....you may be in the inland path more than you previously thought....any ideas about getting the hell out? Even to Lafayette? I was just talking to Darkstar on the phone, and he kindly offered his home, if I have to drive up from Abbeville.

Houma? Now, that's close....that freaks me out.

5. Just checking in with you from Chicago.
Just wanted all of you to know that I'm sending prayers and good thoughts all your way.

I've been listening to the feed from WWL television since 8:00 am CDT. Hoping and praying that this monster turns or weakens before landfall. I'm hoping they keep broadcasting through the night, if not, I'll be up watching the Weather Channel.

Please take care tonight and tomorrow and I'll keep praying and sending good thoughts to all you.

God be with all of you!!!!
