TV Mom Michelle Duggar Rushed to Hospital

Monday December 07, 2009 05:45 PM EST
TV Mom Michelle Duggar Rushed to Hospital

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar

Michelle Duggar, star of TLC's 18 Kids and Counting, was rushed to an Arkansas hospital over the weekend – but her pregnancy with Baby No. 19, not due until spring, wasn't the reason for her dash to the doctor.

"This weekend, Michelle Duggar was admitted to an Arkansas hospital due to gallbladder issues," says a network rep. "The pain from a gallstone was generating some contractions. Just to be safe, she was airlifted a Little Rock, Ark., hospital, so that in the unlikely event that she had to be delivered early, she would be close to a NICU center. Though there were some fears that the baby was in trouble initially, it soon was discovered to be solely the gallstone causing the discomfort. Michelle is resting comfortably, and the baby is doing fine."

For now, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar's brood of 18 kids will have to get by without Mom at home. "Doctors want to observe Michelle in the hospital for the next couple of days," says the rep, "but it would appear that the pain medication they have given her for the gallstone has worked, and there is no need for immediate surgery. The hope is that any necessary surgery can be delayed until after she delivers."

2. He needs to be sterilized.
There is no justifiable reason why they should be having so many kids.

TLC should also be boycotted for enabling people like these to continue creating more mouths to feed.

It works both ways.

I am in no way defending what I consider to be despicable, avaricious behavior by this "family", but I wouldn't want their right to choose to violated.

31. No, it doesn't.
The fundies want to require grotesque "education" sessions before "allowing" an abortion. We are the party of "choice', and choice must be free or there is none.

It would behoove Ms. Duggar to educate herself on the damage her body will sustain from constant pregnancy, but the choice to treat herself as a factory is hers.

19. I agree
Not that I agree with their views because I don't, but I don't think their freedom to have children should ever be taken away. It is all about choice and we should all be free to chose what is best for us not what someone else tells us is best for us. If that lifestyle works for them then I don't care how many children they have.

No one's stopping her from having as many children as she can before menopause. Hell, if they want to pay for it she can continue to have some after menopause too.

Maybe your inability to see the humor in the freakshow that is the Duggar's is part of the reason you take a one-liner on a message board so seriously.

8. Or a giant sprinkler scattering babies to the four corners of the earth
Of course at the rate they're going, there will be Duggars all over the globe. For those 19 (20..21..22...???) kids will have 10 or 20 of their own kids, each. Then each of those 10-20 kids will have 10-20 of their own. Eventually it will get to the point that they'll have to resort to inbreeding because there won't be anybody left but Duggars.

And Mormons....

44. A chilling thought
But I think nature and society have a way of sorting these things out.

Most women would give a second thought if a Duggar son asked them out. Being turned into a human queen bee is probably abhorrent to most women.

Same with most men. If a Duggar woman expressed a desire to be "just like mommy", it would send most men scattering.

34. OK, I know I'm going to get creamed for this but,
I have a problem with terms like "professional womb" and "it's not a womb, it's a clown car" comments. Pro-choice doesn't only refer to whether or not to have children, it means to be able to determine how many children you will have. For whatever reason, she seems to be happy having child after child. It's not a CHOICE most of us would make and I would hope they would be more environmentally conscious and all that, but it is her choice. Am I missing something here?

35. Here's what you're missing:
Anti-choice not only implies having a personal disagreement with abortion, but with criminalizing it.

Advocating legal restrictions on abortion is in no way similar to calling this woman a baby factory on an anonymous messageboard. She's free to have as many kids as she wants - and we're free to look at their family like the freak show that it is.

Make sense?

38. I don't see how this relates to my question.
If you and others want to refer to her and her family as a "freak show" I say goddess bless the First Amendment. I also understand that her religion preaches abortion is murder and all that. All of those points have to do with her. My point is us, those of us who are pro-choice. Why do we find it necessary to ridicule her CHOICE to have lots of kids?

Let me give you an analogy: I chose to be childless. When I was in my 20's and 30's and that fact would come up during the course of conversation, it wasn't unheard of for some anti-choicer to pop up and accuse me of hating children or of being selfish and self-centered. (Which, if true, would be the perfect reason NOT to have children. But I digress.) The similarity is the lack of respect for the choices that I, and in this case, Mrs. Duggar, made. The point would be that, if one is truly pro-choice in the truest sense of the term, neither I nor Mrs. Duggar should be the subject of ridicule by true pro-choicers.

40. You're still missing the point that
one side is arguing for the criminalization of a medical procedure, and the other side is saying mean things on a messageboard about a woman they will never meet. And your situation isn't equivalent either - no one forced you under penalty of law to have children, they just said mean and hurtful things to you about it. I absolutely support this woman's right to destroy her uterus because of a fairy tale she believes. I also think I have the right to make jokes about her.

You can argue that it's offensive, childish, immature, etc. to call her a professional womb, but to somehow say that "pro-choice" means I can't criticize someone for the choices they make is ridiculous. Hell, that's what most of DU is, criticizing other people for the choices they make.

57. Big difference
between calling someone a murderer and calling someone a professional womb. On the offensive spectrum murderer ranks a whole lot higher.

Maybe we should all be polite and not ever post anything remotely unoffensive but it just isn't going to happen. Duggar has the choice to populate a small town. As long as I don't fight to make laws to stop her I think the least I should be entitled to do is disagree with her choice and call her a couple of silly names.

68. It doesn't matter if I have a problem with it or not, it's protected speech.
Whether it should be or not is definitely something to discuss, but they can call people whatever they want. Just like I can call the Duggars certifiably insane.

Now if an anti-abortionist took it a step further to physically attack a doctor, or if I broke into the Duggars home one night and cut off Mr. Duggar's balls, that would be wrong, both in my opinion and under the opinion of the law.

I know you're favorite past time is trying to bait liberals into looking like hypocrites, though, so I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to devote my time to this.

to be prosecuted. He was simply explaining that calling a large swathe of the US population "murderers" for their support of reproductive rights is a hell of a lot more offensive than calling some fundie nutjob a baby machine.

78. I agree it is more offensive and it's still protected.

49. I like to refer to her as a clown car. Because she is. She makes
babies to take care of other babies. Her older children have the responsibility of raising her younger children. All for a reality show. These people are a menace.

59. She's a genteel "Octo-Mom"
OctoMom is scary and weird.. The "Little People" family, these folks, & the Jon + Kate + 8 - Jon people are modern, crass materialists..The Duggars are the flipside of that whole weird coinage that is "reality" tv..

all these people are PAID to let others be voyeurs into their lives..so they don;t actually have to make money on their own to support the lifetyles they eant to have..

73. That's interesting you brought her up because I was just thinking
that the Dugar types are probably what factored into her motivation somewhat. Although I do think she is completely certifiable, the glorification of how many babies people can pop out is getting really scary and just encourages these fringe types to make that leap. I keep thinking of the kids who will have little if any individual time and attention with their parents and it's just heartbreaking.

Just askin'.....

The Duggars are mass-breeding kids to take over the planet with (Nazi) fundie values.

43. 75% of them will rebel
and become progressives. They will tell horrific stories about a childhood lost because they had to raise their younger siblings. Mom was too busy with the tinniest ones so once a child became a toddler then the school age children kicked in to help.

Crazy.

45. 75% ?? That percentage seems high to me, but I'm sure some of them will.

In fact, I'm counting on one of the girls to write a tell-all book at some point (I'm thinking perhaps Jinger).

I also believe that one of the Gosselin twins will pen a book some day.

Edited because it's hard to keep the families straight.
