why not a generic "equality" forum?
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 11:34 PM by ulTRAX
As soon as "race" is added to the forum title, it implies discussion is limited to racial equality. Yet Democrats, it would seem, should be interested in civic equality. After all we live in a nation where one citizen's vote can weigh 1000x more than another's. That's what a voter in Bush's 2000 Florida lead weighed compared to a voter in Gore's national lead. We pay the same tax rates yet there is no representational equality.

I know, I know.... this is an ideological blind spot of so-called Democrats. It's an article of faith there's some intrinsic wisdom in our anti-democratic federalist system that's taboo to question.

Democracy and equality be damned!

1. my thoughts
The forum is Race AND Equality. So, I think one could post any topic dealing with equality, not just those relating to race/ethnicity. Perhaps some will see it that way; perhaps that is the "life" this forum will follow, but I feel it will be an interesting forum, nonetheless. I look forward to postings here. I have already added it to my favorites! :)

Blessings!

2. ideological blind spot of Democrats
I'm well aware of the name but my comment stands. I believe that the new groups reflect the the ideological limitations of traditional Democratic issues. I was hoping for and advocated http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=120x24383 that any new forums EXPAND those issues to what true Progressives see as issues

A quick review of the current forums vs my list and we see that blind spot in action... there's no forums on the BIG issues that shape the smaller ones: Constitutional reform, rethinking democracy. rethinking federalism, rethinking capitalism, rethinking corporate rights, etc. Yet unless the Democrats can deal those big issues, they'll be left performing minor tweaks to a dysfunctional system.

4. the ol' college try
I think you have some good ideas. Why not repost again? This time, just a suggestion; make it short and sweet. Use the last paragraph's list of things (Constitutional reform..etc) and a brief mission statement. Avoid anything that sounds negative, make it sound more like a very proactive thing. I know that sounds "pollyannish" but it might have more appeal. Also, post it in the General Discussion -- Political (I have seen the most traffic there).

Just a thought!

5. As a white woman....
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 12:25 AM by Jackie97
I'll be the first to say that I don't have nearly as much awareness about the issues of non-white people as I need to have. There is an ideological blindspot in the Democratic party, the feminist movement, and other progressive movements because they're often ran by white people who don't always "get it".

Non-whites have an eye for things that we don't have. That's why it's important to have a forum solely for that purpose.

Just like it's good to have a gender equality forum (if it develops). Each issue of equality is special, and needs special exploration. Gathering for the one common cause doesn't have to be done in every forum, every protest, etc.

The Democratic Party would be stonger if they identified blind spots and did something about them.

Plus, I wouldn't think that the issue of race always has to be political (but maybe it does in this forum, I could be wrong).

I just want to say that I'm not completely white. I have a lot of native American in me. I just don't count myself as that because I feel completely white. At least other non-whites have their culture left. Sorry, I just thought I'd clear up that I'm not completely white.
