Starting my exercise "plan" today!
Some of you know I am not the healthiest camper in the bunch, but I can walk a bit more than I have been doing without too much pain. So I'm starting right now. Too rainy to walk outside and we're still seeing the snow melt off, so I'm doing laps (really slow ones ;P ) thru my kitchen.

Happy New Year!

1. I'm treadling my new spinning wheel at least 6 hours a day.
I have two more batches of luxury stuff to spin up and then I start exercising my hands and arms when I finish it, wind it up, and either knit or weave with it.

8. Well, that
and the fact that fibro makes me clumsy as hell.

As for trying weaving, try to find a course at an adult education center or weaving shop. It requires too large a capital investment to jump into blind.

29. If I had wanted a new hobby, the local Craigslist recently had several looms for sale
For really good prices. I was tempted since I used to be fascinated by my great aunt's large loom and loved the cloth she wove. But I have too many interests already and no room for a loom.

For those who are getting into it, do check your local Craigslists in the Arts & Crafts section. You never know what you will find.

4. 30 minutes a day
I posted this on the other thread, but just for completeness, my New Year's resolution is 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike.

By the way, when I tried walking in the house, I aggravated my hip, due to the frequent turns, I think. I'm just saying keep an eye out for that. I wonder if there is some way to avoid it. I would really like to exercise walk in the house.

5. Thanks for the suggestion! I think Ill be ok because i can walk a loop
I have a big oval i can walk via a hallway thru my kitchen and great room...As long as the cats don't get underfoot I should be ok. :)

Exercise bike would be great. I'd just pop in a cd and go for it. :)

6. the world's cheapest exercise bike
This is the one I have. It looks like a joke, but it is cast iron (or something) and really works.

Light hand weights and walking mostly. Good suggestion though!

11. Here I posted this in GD
you might find it useful

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x107092

Oh and four years ago I was 50 pounds heavier, and could not walk more than ten minutes without getting winded. Two months of horrible medical reasons why I could not exercise, so I am back at square one for my exercise. Ok... not square one. I am up to 10 minutes on the elliptical and don't laugh... 10 push ups and 15 crunches.

Realize when training medics I used to run 10 minute miles, 75 push-ups on a lazy day, and over 150 crunches... I was in the best shape of my life. I also was able to self rescue on a rope system using prusiks for over twenty feet.... that means climbing up a rope.

So I know what it is to start from the bottom. And I also know what is to be up there in fitness levels.

If you need any ideas, feel free to PM... and the most important tip, stretch... and when you do, easy does it and do it slow, no jerking... absolutely no jerking. For all the exercise, stretching with the wrong technique will injure you faster than you can say injury.

Oh and I was one of the first women to do that shit. SO yes I am proud about it.

14. I'm sorry you got knocked off schedule.
Hope it's all in the past now. I have severe joint pain (we dont know why yet) and so I am taking baby steps. If I push too hard it knocks me back for days...balancing act for me at this point.

15. what is this with pain
My rib cage has been hurting for three months. At least I can go to the doctor due to having Medicare, but no answers yet. I remind myself a lot of people are much sicker or dead, but it does get to me. Has anything helped your joint pain?

16. Anti-inflamatory foods knock it back to a less severe level
Other than that, I am taking pain pills - which I would like to stop. We've tested for everything and don't really have a clue. I've noticed that I get a lot colder and very tired when the pain ramps back up.

I wonder what's up with your rib cage? My first though was that you might be sleeping on it weirdly lol...what a random thought to have. Hope they find the source soon...long term pain is really an annoying thing. And debilitating. Takes the fun out of everything for me lately. :(

although the tests are fine, I have wondered.

I do well with non-yeasted breads and seem to have more pain with the other.

20. My brother suggested it one day over dinner
I started the diet and saw immediate improvements. My doctor and I talked about the diet and tests necessary for a diagnosis and decided that since I responded to the diet it was not really necessary to do the testing. I got an app with gluten free products and read labels. I got pretty god at cooking. Oh and for me it is not the yeast, but gluten. Hey the chocolate chip cookies are to die for, and chiefly safe.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 05:58 PM by nadinbrzezinski
Tortillas, I mean corn tortillas, corn, beans, rice, quinoa, potatoes, yams are safe and you can find ready to bake mixes at the store...

Just remember bread will be heavier...nature of beast.

26. I started playing with the foods on this list:
Edited on Tue Jan-04-11 12:36 PM by Lucinda
http://www.metabolismadvice.com/anti_inflammatory_food/

Mostly the fruits from that list, in addition to what I was already eating, in the beginning.

I did more research, and I noticed immediate positive results from adding Cranberry Juice to my diet. I also do well with unsweetened pineapple juice(which also helped my digestion)

I stopped eating as much processed food as I could.
I was instinctively avoiding white potato, I just didn't feel as good if I had any, and Tesha's post below supports that result for me.
I consume butter, coconut oil and olive oil but stay away from all other oils in cooking.
I need grain for a stomach issue and have been using tortillas and flatbreads to keep that aspect working ok.
I also have very few sugar cravings now, the fruit/juice satisfies that. :)

Overall, I eat more veggies and fruit and only eat meat proteins when I feel the need.

I have also been doing oil pulling with sesame oil.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_pulling

It doesn't sound like much, but the juices made an instant impact on how I felt...the other things have just been experimental. If I feel better, I adopt the practice into my daily diet/routine.

24. Solanine...
"Potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant may actually make pain from inflammation worse.
These vegetables are part of the nightshade family of plants and contain a chemical alkaloid called solanine.
Solanine can trigger pain in some people. "

This is one of my problems - imagine pain from veggies!
I have found that peeling them works somewhat... sometimes... and limiting the quantity works for me too.

25. That's really good to know Tesha. Thank you!
I haven't been eating tomatoes lately, and have been instinctively avoiding white potato...and my pain is less. I usually eat the sweet potato and other veggies in my roast vegetable bakes. I miss white potato, but I noticed I wasn't feeling good when I had some, so I stopped.
